Belkacem Haba Urges Algerian Youth to Pursue Excellence and Build Global Careers
BY Dr. Hana Saada
ALGIERS — Renowned Algerian inventor and technology pioneer Belkacem Haba has called on Algeria’s younger generation to pursue excellence with determination, ambition and strategic vision, encouraging them to develop internationally competitive careers while remaining committed to contributing to their country’s future.
Speaking to La Patrie News on the sidelines of the inaugural meeting of the High Council of the National Scientific Community Abroad, Haba delivered a message of perseverance and high aspiration to Algerian students and young professionals.
“I encourage young people to work hard and to strive to achieve outstanding accomplishments in their respective fields,” Haba said, urging them to adopt a long-term perspective when planning their professional development.
The internationally recognised researcher, whose career spans artificial intelligence, nanotechnology and semiconductor innovation, also advised young Algerians to seek opportunities where they could realise their full potential.
“You should go to the country where you can succeed the most,” he said, stressing that international mobility should be viewed as an opportunity to acquire knowledge, experience and expertise capable of enriching both individual careers and future national development.
Haba further encouraged students and young graduates to adopt a proactive approach toward career planning rather than allowing opportunities to emerge by chance.
He emphasised the importance of defining clear professional objectives, continuously developing technical skills, and building careers strategically in order to maximise long-term success in highly competitive scientific and technological sectors.
His remarks came during the inaugural meeting of the High Council of the National Scientific Community Abroad, chaired by Algeria’s Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Kamel Baddari, at the Abdelhafid Ihaddadène Scientific and Technological Hub in Sidi Abdellah.
Established under the directives of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, the new institutional body aims to mobilise the expertise of Algerian scientists and researchers living abroad in support of the country’s long-term development strategy.
The founding session brought together 24 members in person and seven others via videoconference.
During the meeting, Baddari described Algeria’s scientific diaspora as “a strategic asset comparable to the country’s natural resources,” highlighting its potential to strengthen research, technology transfer, innovation and scientific cooperation between Algerian institutions and leading international research centres.
The Council has been tasked with reinforcing links between researchers abroad and national universities, facilitating technology transfer, and contributing to the development of a national scientific monitoring system capable of supporting economic diversification and innovation.
Professor Elias Zerhouni, General Coordinator of the inaugural meeting, described the establishment of the Council as “a historic turning point,” noting that Algeria’s growing scientific community—both at home and abroad—could play a decisive role in advancing the country’s research ecosystem and knowledge-based economy.
