Algeria’s Communication Minister Calls for Strong Voter Turnout Ahead of Legislative Elections

By Dr. Hana Saada

ALGIERS — Algeria’s Minister of Communication, Zoheir Bouamama, has called on citizens to participate massively in Thursday’s legislative elections, describing the vote as a defining civic responsibility and a key pillar in strengthening the country’s democratic institutions.

Speaking during a visit to the International Press Centre established at the International Conference Centre (CIC) for media coverage of the legislative elections, Bouamama stressed that the electoral process extends beyond an administrative exercise, characterising it as a reaffirmation of citizens’ commitment to the institutions of the Republic.

The minister underlined that voting remains central to democratic participation and urged all Algerians to exercise their constitutional right at the ballot box. He noted that members of the Algerian community abroad had already begun casting their votes through overseas polling stations.

According to Bouamama, citizenship is founded on two inseparable principles: rights and responsibilities. He argued that strong state institutions derive their legitimacy from broad popular participation, making voter engagement an essential component of national governance.

Emphasising the significance of individual participation, Bouamama said every vote contributes to shaping the country’s future and to electing representatives capable of addressing citizens’ concerns and aspirations.

He cautioned that abstaining from the electoral process effectively means relinquishing one’s right to influence public affairs, while allowing others to determine the country’s political direction.

The minister also placed the legislative elections within a broader national context, noting that Algeria is preparing to witness three major events within a short period.

The first, he said, is Thursday’s legislative elections, expressing confidence in the successful conduct of the electoral process.

The second coincides with celebrations marking Independence Day and Youth Day, during which Bouamama called on citizens to draw inspiration from the sacrifices made by previous generations during Algeria’s War of Independence and to continue safeguarding the country’s stability and development.

He concluded by referring to the third national event—the Algerian national football team’s upcoming FIFA World Cup fixture scheduled for Friday—expressing hope that the country would celebrate further success with another positive result for the national team.
