Algeria Turns Food Sovereignty into Reality: A Historic Agricultural Breakthrough and a Flexible Farming System Serving Producers

By Maamar Gani

Algeria is currently witnessing what can only be described as a genuine agricultural celebration, one that vividly reflects the remarkable strides the country has made towards achieving food sovereignty and strengthening its food security. Across the nation’s principal cereal-producing provinces, an exceptional production boom and historically abundant harvest are unfolding, underpinned by a forward-looking and sustainable national strategy designed to support farmers and safeguard the fruits of their labour.

This season’s unprecedented abundance is no longer confined to statistical reports; it has become a tangible reality across Algeria’s fields and farms, driven by the combined efforts of agricultural producers and the strategic vision adopted by the public authorities. That vision has demonstrated a high level of preparedness to absorb this record harvest while removing the logistical and operational obstacles traditionally associated with large-scale agricultural production.

The exceptional cereal harvest crowns a comprehensive policy of agricultural support and encouragement. Favourable climatic conditions, combined with regular autumn and spring rainfall, contributed significantly to expanding cultivated areas and improving crop yields. Yet the decisive factor behind this success has been the State’s proactive support provided through the Cereal and Dry Legumes Cooperatives (CCLS), which successfully met the strong demand for subsidised seeds while supplying modern sowing equipment, fertilisers and agricultural inputs through instalment payment schemes. These measures were complemented by banking facilities, seasonal agricultural loans and the restructuring of debts owed by farmers previously affected by drought.

This comprehensive support transformed the 2025–2026 agricultural season into an exceptional campaign, reflected in an unprecedented demand for harvesting equipment that illustrates the scale of this year’s agricultural bounty across Algeria.

In line with the directives of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, who instructed that all necessary resources and equipment be placed at the disposal of farmers, the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Fisheries responded with speed and operational flexibility by introducing a package of practical and innovative measures aimed at ensuring that the harvest campaign proceeds under optimal conditions while protecting every grain of wheat produced.

Among the most notable initiatives was the launch of the Hassad.dz digital platform, an innovative technological solution enabling farmers to request combine harvesters electronically. The platform is supported by the mobilisation of a fleet exceeding 1,300 harvesting machines coordinated between the Algerian Interprofessional Cereals Office (OAIC) and Agro Drive, ensuring comprehensive operational coverage across producing regions.

In a further measure designed to facilitate harvesting operations, the authorities eliminated administrative barriers by allowing all farmers—including those who do not possess an official farmer identification card—to deliver their harvests directly to cooperative storage facilities through a simple production declaration. The initiative ensures the smooth flow of deliveries while preventing any producer from being excluded from the marketing process.

Government support has also been reinforced through substantial investments in modern agricultural machinery. Agro Drive strengthened the national fleet with the acquisition of 331 new combine harvesters and 1,800 tractors, while activating a strategic partnership with the National Company for Agricultural Equipment Production (PMAT) to deploy additional machinery to the country’s highest-producing regions under the supervision of Minister Yacine El-Mahdi Oualid.

Storage and collection operations have likewise been adapted to the exceptional harvest. All grain collection and storage centres have been instructed to operate seven days a week without interruption, extending their daily reception hours, including weekends and public holidays, in order to alleviate pressure on collection points and accelerate the unloading of agricultural produce.

Alongside these immediate operational measures, Algeria continues to demonstrate a long-term strategic vision through an ambitious programme to construct 350 new grain collection and storage centres across the country. Once completed, these facilities are expected to significantly expand national storage capacity while eliminating the delays that previously forced farmers to wait extended periods before unloading their harvests.

This comprehensive national mobilisation and the close coordination achieved among agricultural authorities, equipment manufacturers and technology service providers demonstrate that Algeria possesses not only fertile land and determined producers but also an increasingly flexible and responsive agricultural management system capable of adapting rapidly to operational challenges. The record harvest achieved this season therefore represents a historic milestone in Algeria’s broader strategy to build a strong, competitive and sustainable national economy founded on enhanced food sovereignty and agricultural resilience.
