Algeria Imposes Temporary Freight Traffic Restrictions in Algiers Ahead of Legislative Elections
By Dr. Hana Saada
ALGIERS — Algerian authorities have announced temporary traffic restrictions on specific categories of freight vehicles in the capital, Algiers, as part of exceptional security and logistical measures introduced ahead of the country’s legislative elections scheduled for 2 July.
The Directorate of Transport, Traffic and Circulation of Algiers Province said Tuesday that the restrictions were adopted in accordance with Ministerial Order No. 01 of 10 June 2026, issued by the Ministry of the Interior, Local Authorities and Transport, with the objective of facilitating the smooth organisation of the national electoral process.
Under the temporary measures, heavy vehicles transporting sand, gravel, timber and wood products, construction materials of all types, as well as fuel tanker trucks, will be prohibited from circulating within the capital during the designated period.
The restrictions will take effect from 00:00 on Wednesday, 1 July 2026, and remain in force until 05:00 on Friday, 3 July 2026, covering both polling day and the immediate post-election period.
Provincial transport authorities called on all freight operators and transport companies concerned to comply fully with the ministerial directive, warning that violations of the temporary traffic measures could result in legal sanctions.
The Directorate stressed, however, that the restrictions will not apply to vehicles responsible for supplying essential goods to the population. Exemptions include trucks transporting staple food products such as milk, flour, meat, fruits and vegetables, in addition to other essential food commodities required to ensure the continuity of daily supply chains throughout the electoral period.
The temporary traffic measures form part of broader administrative and security arrangements implemented by Algerian authorities to ensure the orderly conduct of the legislative elections while maintaining the uninterrupted provision of essential public services and food supplies across the capital.
