Algeria Heads to the Polls: More Than 24.7 Million Voters to Elect 407 MPs in High-Stakes Legislative Elections

ALGIERS — Algeria will head to the polls on Thursday as more than 24.7 million registered voters are called upon to elect the 407 members of the 10th legislature of the People’s National Assembly (APN) in legislative elections presented as a key milestone in the country’s democratic process and institutional renewal.

The elections will determine the composition of Algeria’s lower house of parliament amid official efforts to promote greater transparency, institutional renewal and higher ethical standards in public life.

The electoral process concerns 24,727,041 registered voters, making it one of the country’s largest nationwide democratic exercises.

Nationwide voting infrastructure

While the National Independent Elections Authority (ANIE), headed on an interim basis by Karim Khelfane, is responsible for supervising the electoral process, the logistical organisation of the vote has been entrusted to the Ministry of the Interior.

A total of 9,854 candidates, representing 793 electoral lists, are competing for parliamentary seats through an extensive electoral infrastructure comprising 13,664 polling centres across Algeria and 74 additional voting centres abroad serving the Algerian diaspora.

Young candidates dominate the electoral race

The elections are characterised by a notably youthful candidate pool, with 5,304 candidates under the age of 40, representing approximately 54% of all contenders.

Women account for 2,032 candidates, or around 21% of the total field, while 4,673 candidates—equivalent to 47%—hold university degrees, reflecting an effort to strengthen the educational profile of future lawmakers.

The current electoral roll follows an exceptional revision of voter registrations and includes 23,872,756 voters residing inside Algeria, alongside 854,285 Algerian citizens living abroad.

The Algerian diaspora will elect 12 parliamentary representatives, distributed across several overseas electoral constituencies. Voting for expatriate citizens began earlier this week at diplomatic and consular missions ahead of polling day inside Algeria.

Extensive candidate verification process

The candidate verification process involved an extensive legal and administrative review of nomination files.

For domestic constituencies, authorities examined 10,168 principal candidate files, approving 6,994 while rejecting 3,174. They also reviewed 6,169 substitute candidate applications, validating 3,164 and rejecting 3,005, across 788 collective candidate lists.

For overseas constituencies, 528 principal candidacies were assessed, resulting in 364 approvals and 164 rejections, while 66 collective lists were processed.

Following completion of the verification procedures, electoral authorities approved 793 candidate lists comprising 9,854 candidates eligible to contest Thursday’s legislative elections.

Large-scale logistical mobilisation

Authorities have deployed substantial human and logistical resources to organise the nationwide vote.

Across Algeria, 13,664 polling centres will accommodate 63,385 polling stations, including 134 mobile polling stations operating across 15 provinces to facilitate voting in remote and isolated areas.

For Algerians living overseas, 74 polling centres comprising 439 polling stations have been established.

The operation will be overseen by 68,320 personnel assigned to polling centres and 444,633 officials deployed across polling stations nationwide. An additional 645 supervisors and 3,073 electoral staff have been mobilised to administer voting operations for Algerian citizens residing abroad.
