Algeria Advances Agricultural Mechanisation as Prime Minister Reviews Record Grain Harvest and Modernisation Drive

ALGIERS — Prime Minister Sifi Ghrieb chaired the third session of the National Council for Agricultural Mechanisation on Wednesday, reviewing progress in implementing measures aimed at modernising Algeria’s agricultural sector in line with directives issued by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, the Prime Minister’s Office said.

The meeting focused on assessing the implementation of decisions adopted during the Council’s previous session as part of the government’s broader strategy to strengthen agricultural mechanisation and enhance national cereal production.

Record harvest underscores logistical mobilisation

According to the Prime Minister’s Office, participants examined feedback and proposals submitted by farmers and operators active in the agricultural machinery sector, while reviewing the positive impact of expanding access to agricultural equipment and increasing storage capacity during the current harvest season.

The additional machinery and newly commissioned storage facilities have facilitated the collection of substantial quantities of cereal production, reflecting the effectiveness of the government’s logistical support measures.

The meeting comes amid the first highly positive results of this year’s grain harvest campaign, which has produced an exceptionally abundant crop and required an unprecedented mobilisation of logistics, alongside coordinated efforts involving multiple government institutions, economic sectors and public agencies.

Modernising agricultural equipment

Discussions also focused on farmers’ expectations regarding the renewal and modernisation of agricultural machinery to improve productivity and further strengthen Algeria’s food security strategy.

In line with presidential directives, Ghrieb instructed relevant authorities to implement the necessary measures to distribute combine harvesters according to scientifically established criteria and technical requirements tailored to the harvesting plans of each province.

He further stressed the importance of ensuring comprehensive maintenance services to maximise operational efficiency and guarantee the successful completion of the current harvest campaign.

Expanding domestic manufacturing capacity

Looking ahead to the next agricultural season, the Prime Minister called for strengthening the production capacity of national manufacturers of agricultural machinery while encouraging partnerships with leading international companies to accelerate technology transfer and meet farmers’ growing demand for modern equipment.

He emphasised that such partnerships should maximise local industrial integration while ensuring compliance with the technical specifications required by the agricultural sector.

The meeting also reviewed the financial framework supporting the mechanisation programme, highlighting the role of the Public Treasury and the banking sector in financing the development and modernisation of agricultural production equipment, according to the Prime Minister’s Office.
