Assault on Algerian Child in Boston Sparks Outrage as Algerian and U.S. Authorities Launch Legal Action
By Dr. Hana Saada
Algeria – A video circulating widely across social media platforms has triggered a wave of outrage and condemnation among Algerians following reports that an Algerian child was physically assaulted inside a fan zone. The incident has prompted widespread calls for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the case, particularly as the child holds both Algerian and American citizenship.
According to widely circulated accounts, the child had attended the fan zone to enjoy the match atmosphere and support the Moroccan national football team while wearing the Algerian national team jersey. The situation escalated into a physical assault, generating significant controversy and public indignation after the child was attacked and beaten by a group of Moroccan supporters.
The widely shared footage has further intensified public anger, particularly given that the victim is a minor and that stadiums and fan zones are expected to serve as spaces for celebration, sportsmanship, and interaction among supporters rather than venues for violence and physical assault.
Numerous Algerians have called for firm legal action against anyone found responsible for the assault, emphasizing that protecting children and upholding the spirit of sportsmanship must take precedence over all forms of rivalry and affiliation. Many have demanded the swift prosecution of those involved, while others have urged the Algerian diplomatic authorities to intervene to ensure that the child receives justice. At the same time, several Algerian commentators have appealed to Algerian supporters not to respond to what they described as deliberate provocations.
Social media users have also stressed the importance of the prompt publication of the findings of the official investigation rather than relying solely on information circulating online, arguing that the full truth must be established and responsibilities clearly determined, particularly as the assault on the Algerian child has become a matter of significant public concern in Algeria.
According to information reported by Echorouk News, the victim has been identified as Wassim, a 14-year-old boy born in Boston who holds both Algerian and American citizenship. He had travelled to Boston’s Fan Zone accompanied by Moroccan friends to watch the Morocco–Netherlands match while wearing the Algerian national team jersey and cheering for the Moroccan side.
The newspaper reported that, following the Netherlands’ goal during the match, the child was subjected to a “cowardly assault” by approximately 35 Moroccan individuals after finding himself alone when the friends accompanying him abandoned him.
According to the same source, the incident prompted the Algerian Consulate in New York to file a legal complaint, while the U.S. authorities also initiated separate legal proceedings. Members of the Algerian Consulate subsequently travelled to the hospital in Boston, where Wassim and his father were present, to monitor the case and provide consular assistance.
Echorouk News further reported that surveillance camera footage enabled investigators to identify 35 individuals suspected of involvement in the assault, who are expected to be brought before the U.S. courts in the coming hours.
The newspaper added that U.S. law provides for prison sentences of between 20 and 25 years for physical assaults against minors, subject to the legal classification of the offence by the competent judicial authorities.
