Petković Leads Algeria to Second-Ever FIFA World Cup Knockout Stage Appearance
By Dr. Hana Saada
ALGIERS — Algeria head coach Vladimir Petković has guided the national team to the knockout stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, becoming only the second coach in the country’s history to lead the Desert Foxes beyond the group phase of football’s biggest tournament.
Algeria secured qualification for the Round of 32 following a 3-3 draw against Austria in their final Group Stage fixture, matching the country’s historic achievement at the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil, when the national team advanced to the knockout rounds for the first time under then-head coach Vahid Halilhodžić.
The qualification follows a campaign that began under difficult circumstances for Petković. Algeria opened the tournament with a 3-0 defeat to Argentina, with Lionel Messi scoring all three goals, before responding with a 2-1 victory over Jordan in their second group match.
Despite that victory, Petković continued to face criticism from sections of commentators and analysts regarding his tactical choices and the team’s performances during the early stages of the tournament. The Swiss coach, however, maintained his approach throughout the competition, culminating in Algeria’s decisive qualification for the knockout rounds after the draw with Austria.
With the result, Petković joins Halilhodžić as only the second coach to guide Algeria beyond the FIFA World Cup group stage, adding a new milestone to the country’s football history twelve years after its first appearance in the knockout phase.
Throughout the tournament, Petković maintained continuity in his technical project despite external scrutiny, continuing to work with the squad as Algeria progressed through the group stage. The team’s qualification coincides with the Algerian Football Federation’s decision, taken before the tournament, to extend his contract until 2028, reflecting the Federation’s long-term commitment to its current sporting project.
Algeria’s progression to the Round of 32 represents the country’s second qualification for the World Cup knockout stage and restores the national team’s presence among the tournament’s last remaining contenders. The achievement also strengthens the foundations of the national team’s ongoing development as it prepares for the challenges of the tournament’s knockout phase.
