FAF’s Long-Term Strategy Underpins Algeria’s Return to the World Cup Knockout Stage
By Dr. Hana Saada
ALGIERS — Algeria’s qualification for the knockout stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup reflects not only the performances of the national team’s players and coaching staff, but also a broader organisational strategy implemented by the Algerian Football Federation (FAF), which has sought to rebuild institutional stability and strengthen the national team’s competitive framework in recent years.
Since assuming office, the Federation, led by President Walid Sadi, has pursued a long-term approach centred on continuity and stability, moving away from the frequent managerial changes that characterised previous periods. Rather than responding to isolated setbacks with immediate structural changes, the Federation maintained confidence in head coach Vladimir Petković, despite calls in some quarters to reconsider the technical direction of the national team following mixed results earlier in his tenure.
That strategy was reinforced shortly before the start of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, when the FAF extended Petković’s contract until 2028, signalling its commitment to long-term planning. The decision came at a time when debate continued over the coach’s ability to guide Algeria to success on the global stage. Algeria’s progression to the knockout rounds has since been viewed within the Federation as validation of its emphasis on continuity and strategic planning.
Beyond technical decisions, the Federation also concentrated on creating favourable conditions for the national team throughout its World Cup campaign. Preparations were supported by detailed logistical planning and organisational coordination designed to enable players and coaching staff to focus exclusively on sporting performance during the tournament.
FAF President Walid Sadi also travelled to the United States, one of the host nations of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where he accompanied the Algerian delegation throughout the competition. His presence alongside the players and technical staff reflected the Federation’s institutional support during one of the country’s most significant football events and contributed to maintaining close coordination with the national team during the tournament.
The Federation additionally sought to minimise external pressures surrounding the squad by fostering an environment intended to provide the coaching staff with greater operational stability. This approach coincided with Algeria’s decisive 3–3 draw against Austria, the result that secured qualification for the World Cup knockout stage for only the second time in the nation’s history.
For the Algerian Football Federation, the achievement reflects a broader administrative project that combines long-term planning, institutional continuity and organisational support with the work carried out by the coaching staff and players on the pitch. Algeria’s return to the World Cup knockout rounds therefore represents not only a sporting milestone but also the outcome of a management model built around stability, strategic planning and sustained institutional commitment.
