Hassi Messaoud Airport Gradually Resumes Operations Following Runway Upgrades

BY Dr. Hana Saada

ALGIERS — Krim Belkacem Airport in Hassi Messaoud has begun the gradual resumption of its operations following the completion of rehabilitation works on its main runway, with around ten domestic flights currently operating each day, airport officials said on Sunday.

According to the airport’s Acting Director, Abdelwahab Abbab, flight operations are being restored under a carefully planned schedule coordinated with the various stakeholders in Algeria’s air transport sector. The phased approach is intended to progressively increase flight frequencies until the airport resumes its full domestic network, while ensuring strict compliance with aviation safety standards.

Strategic Gateway for Algeria’s Energy Sector

The resumption of domestic services is aimed at ensuring the continuity of public air transport services and meeting the travel needs of passengers and economic operators, particularly those working in Algeria’s oil and gas industry.

Officials stressed that Krim Belkacem Airport occupies a strategic position as the principal air gateway to Hassi Messaoud, one of Algeria’s largest hydrocarbon production hubs.

The airport continues to serve as a vital connection point linking the region with airports across the country, facilitating the movement of passengers and employees of petroleum companies while supporting economic activity and investment in the area.

Strong Traffic Performance in 2025

According to airport figures, Krim Belkacem Airport handled 4,572 domestic flights and 170 international flights during 2025.

In addition, the airport recorded 12,821 transport movements related to the petroleum sector, underlining its growing operational importance and its central role in serving Algeria’s energy industry.

Modernisation Programme Continues

Airport authorities also confirmed that work is continuing on the construction of four new aircraft parking stands as part of a broader modernisation programme.

The infrastructure upgrades are designed to improve passenger services, strengthen the airport’s operational capacity, and accommodate the anticipated growth in air traffic while enhancing the efficiency of airport operations.
