Djellaoui Calls for Faster Delivery of Algeria’s Strategic Railway Projects
BY Dr. Hana Saada
ALGIERS — Algeria’s Minister of Public Works and Basic Infrastructure, Abdelkader Djellaoui, on Sunday instructed officials to accelerate the implementation of several strategic railway projects, stressing the need to strengthen coordination among all stakeholders, comply with contractual deadlines, and uphold quality standards.
The directives were issued during a coordination meeting dedicated to reviewing the progress of ongoing railway construction projects and related technical studies, according to a statement released by the ministry.
Progress of the Eastern Mining Railway Reviewed
A central focus of the meeting was the progress of the Eastern Mining Railway, a 422-kilometre line linking Annaba, Souk Ahras, Tébessa, Djebel El Onk, and Bled El Hadba.
Participants reviewed construction progress across the various sections of the railway and assessed compliance with the implementation schedule.
The meeting brought together senior officials from the ministry’s central administration, executives from the National Agency for Railway Investment Studies and Monitoring (ANESRIF), chief executives of several state-owned companies involved in railway infrastructure development, as well as engineering consultancies and project supervision firms.
Additional Resources Ordered to Accelerate Construction
Technical presentations outlined the status of construction works and engineering studies for the strategic projects under review.
Following these presentations, Minister Djellaoui instructed the mobilisation of additional human and material resources, enhanced coordination between the various project stakeholders, and a faster pace of construction.
He also ordered the organisation of an on-site inspection in the coming days to assess implementation progress directly and ensure that project execution remains on schedule.
Focus on Mining Logistics Infrastructure
The minister also reviewed the railway connection project linking Toumiat Station to the Béchar–Tindouf–Gara Djebilet railway corridor, together with plans to build a dedicated rail loop for loading and unloading iron ore in the region.
Djellaoui stressed the importance of mobilising all available resources to complete the project within the prescribed deadlines, describing it as a key component in supporting Algeria’s mining industry and strengthening the country’s logistics infrastructure.
Preparations Continue for the Algiers–Tamanrasset Railway
The meeting also examined progress on studies and preparatory work relating to the future Algiers–Tamanrasset railway, one of Algeria’s largest planned transport infrastructure projects.
Officials reviewed technical studies for the Ouargla–El Meniaa section, alongside preparations for launching the Laghouat–Ghardaïa–El Meniaa and El Meniaa–In Salah–Tamanrasset segments.
The minister called for the rapid completion of all technical studies and administrative procedures required to launch these projects at the earliest opportunity.
According to the ministry, the planned railway is expected to expand Algeria’s national rail network, strengthen connectivity between the country’s northern and southern regions, and provide greater support for mining activities and regional economic development.
