From 2014 to 2026: Walid Sadi’s Administrative Leadership Accompanies Algeria’s Two Historic World Cup Milestones
By Dr. Hana Saada
ALGIERS — Algeria’s qualification for the knockout stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup has marked a second major World Cup milestone involving Algerian Football Federation (FAF) President Walid Sadi, who previously served as Director of National Teams during the country’s historic 2014 FIFA World Cup campaign in Brazil.
Separated by twelve years but united by the same historic outcome, Algeria’s two appearances in the World Cup knockout stage have seen Sadi play two distinct leadership roles—first as Director of National Teams in 2014 and later as President of the Algerian Football Federation during the 2026 campaign.
During the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil, Sadi worked alongside then-head coach Vahid Halilhodžić as Director of National Teams, contributing to the administrative and organisational management of a campaign that culminated in Algeria reaching the knockout stage of the tournament for the first time in its history. Algeria’s memorable run ended after an extra-time defeat to eventual world champions Germany, a performance that remains one of the defining moments in the country’s football history.
More than a decade later, Sadi returned to the World Cup in a different capacity, overseeing Algeria’s campaign as President of the Algerian Football Federation. The national team secured qualification for the Round of 32 after earning a dramatic 3-3 draw against Austria, a result that enabled captain Riyad Mahrez and his teammates to advance beyond the group stage and sent Algeria into the World Cup knockout rounds for only the second time.
The latest qualification follows a period of administrative restructuring and organisational stability since Sadi assumed the presidency of the FAF. His tenure has focused on strengthening the institutional framework surrounding the national team while providing the coaching staff and players with the technical, logistical and organisational support required to compete at the highest level of international football. These measures have formed part of the Federation’s broader efforts to create conditions conducive to sustained sporting performance.
Sadi’s involvement also extended beyond administrative oversight from Algeria. He travelled to the United States, one of the host nations of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, to accompany the national team throughout the tournament, closely following preparations and maintaining regular contact with players and the technical staff. His presence reflected the Federation’s commitment to supporting the squad during one of the most significant competitions in its recent history.
With Algeria having now reached the World Cup knockout stage twice—first in 2014 and again in 2026—Sadi has become one of the few football administrators whose career has been associated with both of the national team’s landmark achievements on football’s biggest stage. The two campaigns illustrate the continuity of his involvement in Algeria’s football administration across different leadership roles, highlighting the contribution of institutional planning, organisational continuity and administrative support alongside performances on the pitch.
