Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez Pays Tribute at Martyrs’ Memorial Before Meeting President Tebboune
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez began his official visit to Algeria by laying a wreath at the Martyrs’ Memorial in Algiers before holding talks with President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, as both countries seek to consolidate the gradual restoration of bilateral relations and expand strategic cooperation.

ALGIERS — Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez on Monday began his official visit to Algeria by laying a wreath at the Martyrs’ Memorial (Maqam Echahid) in Algiers, paying tribute to the victims of Algeria’s War of Independence.
During the ceremony, Sánchez observed a minute of silence in memory of the martyrs of the Algerian Revolution, in a gesture reflecting the historical significance of the national monument and the enduring ties between the two countries.
Earlier in the day, the Spanish prime minister arrived in Algiers on a working and friendship visit, where he was welcomed at Houari Boumediene International Airport by Prime Minister Seif Eddine Ghrieb.
Later, President Abdelmadjid Tebboune officially received Sánchez at the Presidency headquarters, where the two leaders held bilateral talks followed by a one-on-one meeting focusing on strengthening cooperation and advancing the ongoing restoration of Algerian-Spanish relations.
The visit comes as Algeria and Spain continue efforts to rebuild ties following the diplomatic tensions that emerged in 2022, with both governments expressing a shared commitment to expanding political dialogue, strengthening economic cooperation and deepening their strategic partnership.
According to Algerian authorities, the visit reflects the common determination of both leaderships to broaden bilateral cooperation across multiple sectors while promoting mutually beneficial partnerships.
It also provides an opportunity for intensified consultations and exchanges of views on a range of regional and international issues of common interest, reinforcing political dialogue and coordination between Algiers and Madrid.
The visit is expected to include discussions on economic cooperation, energy, investment and broader regional developments, underscoring the renewed momentum in relations between the two Mediterranean partners.
