Algeria and Spain Seek to Reset Strategic Partnership as Tebboune, Sánchez Chart Broader Cooperation
Algeria and Spain pledged to deepen bilateral cooperation across energy, investment, security and regional diplomacy following Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez’s official visit to Algiers, with both leaders describing the trip as a turning point in rebuilding their strategic partnership.

ALGIERS — Algeria and Spain agreed on Monday to inject fresh momentum into their bilateral partnership, with President Abdelmadjid Tebboune and Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez committing to broaden cooperation across economic, political and strategic sectors following high-level talks in Algiers.
The discussions, held during Sánchez’s official working and friendship visit to Algeria—his first since relations deteriorated in 2022—reflected what both leaders described as a shared determination to consolidate bilateral ties and open a new chapter in Algerian-Spanish relations.
Following an official welcoming ceremony at the Presidency, the two leaders held one-on-one talks before chairing an expanded meeting involving senior officials from both countries.
In a joint statement after the meeting, President Tebboune described the visit as a significant milestone that demonstrated the political will of both governments to strengthen a partnership capable of delivering mutual benefits across multiple sectors.
“We are deeply satisfied with these fruitful discussions at a time when the long-standing relations between our two countries are experiencing renewed dynamism, clearly reflected during this visit,” Tebboune said.
The Algerian president added that the visit represented an important step towards preparations for the eighth Algeria-Spain High-Level Meeting, scheduled for October, which is expected to provide a new institutional framework for expanding bilateral cooperation.
Tebboune said the renewed momentum in bilateral relations would encourage greater sectoral cooperation while creating new opportunities for businesses, investors and economic operators in both countries.
He expressed confidence that the visit would open “new horizons” for strategic partnerships and mutually beneficial investment opportunities.
Strengthening Economic and Energy Cooperation
Economic cooperation featured prominently in the discussions, with Tebboune expressing hope that Spain would play a constructive role within the European Union in promoting more balanced economic relations between Algeria and the bloc.
The president also called for the reactivation of the Algeria-EU Association Council, which has not convened since 2020, arguing that renewed institutional dialogue would contribute to strengthening economic cooperation.
Energy remained a central pillar of bilateral relations.
Tebboune praised the existing partnership between Algeria and Spain in the energy sector, describing it as evidence of Algeria’s commitment to guaranteeing the energy security of its European partners.
He also said both countries were seeking to broaden cooperation in renewable energy, noting Algeria’s significant potential to become a key player in the Euro-Mediterranean energy transition.
The meeting comes as Algeria has consolidated its position as Spain’s leading natural gas supplier, with Spanish energy companies—including Naturgy, Repsol, Enagás and Moeve—maintaining long-standing strategic partnerships with Algeria’s state-owned energy group Sonatrach.
Security, Justice and Migration
The leaders also reviewed cooperation in security, judicial affairs and migration management.
According to Tebboune, discussions covered strengthening collaboration in combating corruption, accelerating judicial cooperation and facilitating the recovery of illicitly acquired assets transferred abroad.
The Algerian president thanked the Spanish authorities for their constructive cooperation in assisting Algeria’s efforts to recover diverted public assets.
The two sides also examined ways to deepen coordination in addressing irregular migration, human trafficking and transnational organised crime, while exploring measures to facilitate the movement of people between the two countries.
Regional Issues and International Crises
Regional and international developments also featured prominently during the talks.
Tebboune said the two leaders exchanged views on developments in the Middle East, tensions in the Gulf region, and their implications for global food and energy security.
Reaffirming Algeria’s long-standing foreign policy position, the president stressed that political dialogue and peaceful negotiations remain the only viable means of resolving international crises.
He reiterated Algeria’s support for solutions grounded in international law while calling for renewed diplomatic negotiations and respect for the vital interests of Arab states.
Tebboune also welcomed Spain’s “honourable position” on the Palestinian cause.
The discussions further addressed developments in Western Sahara, the Sahel and Libya, with both leaders agreeing to continue consultations and support international and multilateral efforts aimed at achieving peaceful settlements to regional conflicts in accordance with international law and the principles of the United Nations Charter.
The visit marks another step in the gradual normalisation of Algerian-Spanish relations and signals both governments’ intention to rebuild confidence through expanded political dialogue, stronger economic engagement and enhanced strategic cooperation.
