ALGIERS – International media widely covered Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez’s working and friendship visit to Algeria on Monday, portraying the trip as a significant milestone in restoring bilateral relations and laying the foundations for a broader strategic partnership between Algiers and Madrid.

Leading Spanish, Arab and international news organizations highlighted the high-level talks between Sánchez and Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, emphasizing the renewed momentum in political dialogue, economic cooperation and energy partnership after several years of strained relations.

Spanish Media Highlight Diplomatic Breakthrough

Spain’s leading media outlets—including the EFE news agency, El Periódico, Cadena SER, and public broadcaster RTVE—described the meeting between the two leaders as a decisive step toward revitalizing bilateral relations and opening a new phase of comprehensive strategic cooperation.

Their coverage emphasized that the discussions created new opportunities to deepen collaboration across multiple sectors, revive institutional dialogue mechanisms and strengthen political consultations on regional and international issues of mutual concern.

Several Spanish commentators also underscored Algeria’s strategic importance as one of Spain’s principal and most reliable partners, noting that the two governments agreed to convene a high-level bilateral summit in Madrid later this year.

According to the Spanish press, the visit established a solid foundation for expanding cooperation while reinforcing energy security, political coordination and joint efforts to address common Mediterranean challenges.

Regional and International Coverage

Arab media also devoted extensive attention to the visit.

London-based newspaper Al-Araby Al-Jadeed highlighted the shared determination of Algeria and Spain to build a stronger political and economic partnership, citing geographical proximity, Mediterranean ties, expanding commercial and energy cooperation, and closer coordination on combating drug trafficking and irregular migration.

Meanwhile, Turkey’s Anadolu Agency focused on the energy dimension of the visit under the headline “Algeria Strengthens Its Energy Partnership with Spain,” emphasizing both countries’ commitment to expanding cooperation, particularly in renewable energy.

The Turkish news agency also cited President Tebboune’s remarks expressing Algeria’s readiness to develop broader and deeper cooperation with Spain across several strategic sectors, including renewable energy.

Italy’s ANSA news agency likewise highlighted the leaders’ shared commitment to strengthening bilateral cooperation, broadening the scope of their partnership and intensifying political dialogue. It also noted that the visit provided an opportunity for both sides to exchange views on key regional and international developments.

New Momentum in Bilateral Relations

The broad international coverage reflects growing interest in the renewed Algeria-Spain relationship following the normalization of diplomatic ties and the resumption of high-level contacts.

Analysts have pointed to the visit as an important signal of both governments’ determination to move beyond previous tensions by expanding cooperation in energy, investment, trade, security and regional diplomacy, while reinforcing dialogue on issues affecting the Mediterranean and wider international community.
