Algeria Calls for New African Union Strategy to Combat Terrorism and Violent Extremism
Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf urged a comprehensive, institution-driven approach to counter evolving terrorist threats across Africa, highlighting Algeria’s proposals for the African Union’s 2026–2030 counter-terrorism strategy and calling for stronger AU–UN cooperation.

ALGIERS — Algeria has called on the African Union (AU) to adopt a renewed and more comprehensive strategy to address terrorism and violent extremism across the continent, citing the evolving nature of security threats and the need for stronger institutional and operational coordination.
Minister of State, Minister of Foreign Affairs, National Community Abroad and African Affairs Ahmed Attaf participated via videoconference on Tuesday in the ministerial meeting of the AU Peace and Security Council, which focused on strengthening Africa’s collective response to terrorism and violent extremism.
According to a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, participants examined ways to reinforce continental efforts at both the institutional and operational levels, particularly through the African Union’s 2026–2030 Strategic Action Plan on Counter-Terrorism. The plan forms part of the proposals advanced by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune in his capacity as the African Union’s Champion for Counter-Terrorism and the Prevention of Violent Extremism in Africa.
In his address, Attaf stressed the importance of drawing on the full range of African institutional mechanisms to develop a comprehensive and integrated vision for combating terrorism, noting the significant transformation in the operational methods of terrorist groups and the widening scope of the threats they pose.
He recalled that President Tebboune has repeatedly warned that terrorism has become a direct threat to Africa’s peace and stability while simultaneously undermining the continent’s development prospects, arguing that the African Union must adapt its strategy to respond effectively to this changing security landscape.
Attaf also called for enhanced cooperation between the African Union and the United Nations, highlighting Algeria’s contribution during its tenure on the UN Security Council, particularly its role in securing the adoption and implementation of the Council’s January 2025 presidential statement on counter-terrorism while serving as Council president.
Concluding his remarks, the foreign minister reaffirmed Algeria’s confidence in the ability of African nations to defeat terrorism, emphasizing that lasting success depends on strengthening state institutions, equipping security services with the necessary capabilities, addressing the root causes of violent extremism, and expanding effective international partnerships.
