Algiers, Algeria | December 5th, 2024 — In a meeting held on December 5, 2024, at the Ministry of Energy and Mines headquarters, Algeria’s State Minister for Energy, Mr. Mohamed Arkab, welcomed Professor Karim Zeghib, a distinguished Algerian scientist and researcher residing in Canada. This important discussion centered on forging stronger scientific and technological cooperation between Algeria and the international scientific community, particularly in the areas of renewable energy, energy storage, and the national energy transition.

The meeting underscored Algeria’s commitment to accelerating its energy transition strategy and enhancing its renewable energy infrastructure. Alongside Minister Arkab, the meeting was attended by Mrs. Karima Tafer, Secretary of State for Mining, and Mr. Nourredine Yassaa, Secretary of State for Renewable Energies, along with senior ministry officials. The focus of their discussions revolved around critical strategic areas aimed at supporting the country’s energy transition and bolstering the national economy.

One of the key points raised was the importance of mapping out strategic minerals such as lithium, cobalt, and graphite, essential for energy transition industries. The talks highlighted the need to integrate these minerals into Algeria’s industrial landscape, contributing to the development of the renewable energy sector. The potential of these minerals to support energy storage solutions was seen as crucial for the future of green energy technologies.

Additionally, the discussion emphasized Algeria’s need to expand its manufacturing capabilities in the renewable energy sector, particularly in producing essential equipment such as solar panels and energy storage batteries. By developing a domestic supply chain for renewable energy technologies, Algeria aims to meet its ambitious energy goals while fostering local industry and innovation.

The potential for smart grid technologies was also explored, particularly their role in integrating renewable energy into Algeria’s national electricity grid. Furthermore, the importance of creating a conducive environment for the development of electric transportation and energy storage technologies was recognized. The meeting also stressed the need for national integration through the encouragement of local manufacturing, particularly in solar panels and electric batteries.

In a key takeaway from the meeting, both parties agreed to establish a working group to formalize collaboration efforts and develop a concrete action plan focused on local industry development. The team will prioritize projects that enhance Algeria’s energy transition efforts, starting with the utilization of locally available critical and rare minerals, as well as the training and development of local expertise in these fields.

Professor Karim Zeghib, a trailblazer in the field of energy storage and lithium-ion batteries, is a prime example of Algerian scientific excellence on the global stage. Born in 1963, he is currently a professor in chemical engineering and materials science at Concordia University in Canada. Professor Zeghib’s contributions to the development of lithium-ion batteries have been revolutionary, including his pioneering use of lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO₄) as a cathode material, which significantly improved the safety and longevity of batteries used by leading companies such as Tesla and Mercedes.

With more than 546 scientific publications and over 600 patents, Professor Zeghib’s work has been cited over 28,000 times, positioning him as one of the most influential figures in his field. His recent focus on developing solid-state batteries to meet the needs of the electric vehicle sector aligns perfectly with Algeria’s aspirations to become a key player in the global renewable energy and electric transportation industries.

Professor Zeghib’s collaboration with Algeria represents a vital opportunity for the country to harness cutting-edge technologies and deepen its expertise in energy storage and renewable energy. His work not only brings invaluable scientific knowledge but also exemplifies Algeria’s commitment to innovation and sustainable development in the energy sector.

Algeria, through this collaboration, is taking concrete steps toward realizing its energy transition goals, ensuring that its future is built on sustainable, innovative, and self-reliant energy solutions. Professor Zeghib’s leadership and the joint efforts with the Ministry of Energy are expected to play a central role in driving Algeria’s transition to a green and economically prosperous future.
