Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline Moves Into Construction Phase as Algeria Launches TSGP Segment
By Dr. Hana Saada
Algeria, Nigeria and Niger have formally launched construction of the Algerian section of the Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline (TSGP), marking a major milestone in the implementation of one of Africa’s largest strategic energy infrastructure projects.
The launch ceremony took place in Aoulef, in Algeria’s southern Adrar province, where Algeria’s Minister of State and Minister of Energy, Mines and Renewable Energies, Mohamed Arkab, was joined by Nigeria’s Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Ekperikpe Ekpo, and Niger’s Minister of Petroleum, Hamadou Téné.
The event followed the fifth ministerial meeting of the TSGP Steering Committee in Algiers, during which the three countries approved the final feasibility study prepared by engineering consultancy Penspen and endorsed its recommendations, allowing the project to advance to its execution phase.

According to Algeria’s Ministry of Energy, the project is designed to transport between 20 billion and 30 billion cubic metres of natural gas annually from Nigeria through Niger to Algeria before reaching regional and international markets through Algeria’s existing gas transportation, processing and export infrastructure.
Officials said the Algerian segment will also facilitate the transportation of future Nigerian gas volumes while supporting the movement of additional gas produced from Algerian fields, including the Ahnet basin, strengthening collection, transmission and export capacities across the three participating countries.
The ceremony was attended by Adrar Governor Fodil Douifi, Sonatrach Chief Executive Officer Noureddine Daoudi, representatives of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC), officials from Niger’s SONIDEP, as well as senior executives, experts and local authorities from the three countries.

The ministers reaffirmed their commitment to advancing the project, describing it as a reflection of the shared political will of Algeria, Niger and Nigeria to deepen African energy cooperation, strengthen regional integration and promote common economic interests.
They also stated that the transition from planning to construction represents a decisive stage in the development of what is widely regarded as one of the continent’s most significant energy projects.
The TSGP forms part of broader efforts by the three countries to expand strategic infrastructure, enhance continental connectivity and support long-term economic development through regional cooperation and South-South partnerships.
