Student Protest at Ibn Tofail University Highlights Debate Over Security Response and Campus Dialogue in Morocco

ALGIERS — The dispersal of a sit-in by students from Morocco’s Ibn Tofail University outside the Ministry of Higher Education has reignited debate over the authorities’ handling of campus protests, with student organisations accusing the government of prioritising security measures over dialogue in addressing university disputes.

The intervention followed demonstrations organised by students seeking reinstatement after their dismissal from the university. According to the Union of Education Youth in Morocco, security forces dispersed the protest outside the ministry rather than opening negotiations over the students’ demands.

In a statement, the organisation condemned what it described as the use of force against students exercising their right to peaceful protest, arguing that the incident reflected a broader reliance on security-based responses to social and educational disputes.

The group maintained that the issue should have been addressed through dialogue between the ministry, university authorities and the students concerned, warning that security interventions risk deepening tensions rather than resolving underlying grievances.

According to the organisation, the events also raise wider questions regarding the protection of academic freedoms, student representation and the role of universities as spaces for dialogue and civic participation.

The Union further argued that the students’ demands centred on their right to continue their studies and called for a comprehensive solution based on consultation rather than coercive measures.

The incident has renewed public discussion over the balance between maintaining public order and safeguarding the rights of students to organise and express their concerns peacefully, particularly within Morocco’s higher education sector.

Observers note that student movements have historically played an important role in Morocco’s university landscape, making disputes involving academic governance and disciplinary measures particularly sensitive.

The organisation urged civil society groups, academic institutions and political actors to support efforts aimed at resolving the dispute through dialogue, stressing that sustainable solutions require engagement between all stakeholders rather than security intervention alone.
