Algeria Accelerates Automotive Localisation as Strategic GPI Components Plant Nears Production with Equipment Installation Underway

The General Plastic Injection (GPI) project has entered the industrial equipment installation phase, advancing Algeria’s strategy to rebuild domestic automotive manufacturing through higher local integration, technology transfer and the revival of strategic industrial assets.

ALGIERS — Algeria has moved closer to expanding its domestic automotive manufacturing capacity after the General Plastic Injection (GPI) project entered the installation phase for industrial equipment and production lines, marking a key milestone in one of the country’s flagship industrial revival projects, with commercial production scheduled to commence in September.

The latest development follows the official launch of construction works by Prime Minister Sifi Ghrieb during a visit to Tissemsilt Province on 29 April 2026, acting on behalf of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune. The project forms part of the government’s broader programme to revive confiscated industrial assets and reintegrate them into the national economy as productive manufacturing facilities.

According to Algeria Chemical Specialities Holding (ACS), which oversees the project, work is progressing in line with the implementation schedule and has now entered what it described as a decisive phase ahead of the plant’s planned commissioning.

The commencement of equipment installation represents one of the final stages before production begins, reflecting the accelerated pace of implementation recorded since construction officially started earlier this year.

ACS attributed the progress to the coordinated efforts of all stakeholders involved in the project, particularly the engineering and technical teams of General Plastic Injection, led by the company’s chief executive, who have mobilised resources to complete the facility in accordance with technical specifications and established deadlines.

Located in Khemisti municipality, in the Sidi Mansour industrial zone of Tissemsilt, the plant is expected to manufacture plastic components and accessories for the automotive industry, supporting Algeria’s policy of increasing domestic value-added and reducing dependence on imported vehicle parts.

The project is intended to strengthen local supply chains serving the automotive sector by providing domestically manufactured plastic components while supporting the gradual development of an integrated national vehicle industry.

Government officials view the facility as part of a broader industrial strategy aimed at increasing local integration rates, encouraging investment in automotive parts manufacturing and reinforcing national industrial sovereignty through expanded domestic production capacity.

The initiative also seeks to reduce Algeria’s import bill by substituting locally manufactured components for imported products while promoting technology transfer, industrial expertise and specialised manufacturing capabilities.

Beyond its industrial significance, authorities expect the project to generate substantial employment opportunities through the creation of both direct and indirect jobs for engineers, technicians and skilled workers, contributing to regional economic development.

During his April visit, Prime Minister Ghrieb toured the future production facilities and received detailed briefings on the plant’s manufacturing processes, production capabilities and planned product portfolio. He also visited an exhibition showcasing automotive components scheduled to be manufactured at the facility.

Speaking during the visit, Ghrieb reaffirmed President Tebboune’s commitment to rebuilding Algeria’s industrial base by supporting productive investment, strengthening national manufacturing and improving the competitiveness of the country’s economy.

The Prime Minister also oversaw the signing of several agreements aimed at developing Algeria’s automotive components industry, strengthening industrial partnerships, promoting technology transfer and increasing domestic integration rates across the sector.

The project forms part of Algeria’s wider industrial transformation agenda, under which authorities are seeking to develop competitive manufacturing industries capable of supporting economic diversification beyond hydrocarbons. Central to that strategy is the localisation of industrial supply chains, the development of domestic production ecosystems and the establishment of strategic industries capable of supplying both the national market and, eventually, regional export destinations.

For policymakers, the GPI facility represents more than the commissioning of a new manufacturing plant. It embodies a broader effort to transform previously idle industrial assets into productive enterprises capable of generating employment, attracting investment and laying the foundations for a more resilient and technologically advanced manufacturing economy.
