Algeria and Germany Open a New Chapter in Strategic Partnership

President Abdelmadjid Tebboune’s official visit to Berlin signals a new phase in Algerian-German relations, with both countries seeking to deepen cooperation across energy, green hydrogen, advanced industry, technology and investment as Europe looks for reliable long-term strategic partners.

BERLIN — Algeria and Germany moved to elevate bilateral relations to a new strategic level on Wednesday as President Abdelmadjid Tebboune began a two-day official visit to Berlin aimed at expanding cooperation beyond traditional energy ties into a comprehensive partnership spanning industry, technology and the green transition.

The visit, undertaken at the invitation of German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, comes at a time when both governments are seeking to inject fresh momentum into a relationship increasingly shaped by Europe’s evolving energy priorities and Algeria’s drive to diversify its economy through industrial investment and technological cooperation.

During the visit, Tebboune is scheduled to hold talks with President Steinmeier and Chancellor Friedrich Merz, focusing on strengthening longstanding bilateral ties while broadening cooperation across sectors of strategic importance, including hydrocarbons, renewable energy, green hydrogen, pharmaceutical manufacturing, advanced industry and emerging technologies.

The diplomatic agenda also includes an Algerian-German Economic Forum bringing together senior officials, business leaders and investors from both countries. The forum is expected to culminate in the announcement of a strategic partnership framework and the signing of more than 30 agreements and memoranda of understanding covering energy, industrial development, technology, manufacturing and investment.

Germany increasingly regards Algeria as a reliable long-term economic partner capable of supporting European energy security while contributing to broader industrial cooperation.

As Europe’s largest economy continues diversifying energy supplies following recent geopolitical disruptions, Algeria has emerged as an attractive partner owing to its geographical proximity, established energy infrastructure and capacity to expand production in response to growing demand.

That evolving relationship was reinforced by Sonatrach’s first-ever delivery of liquefied natural gas (LNG) to Germany earlier this month, a milestone that underscored Algeria’s growing role within Europe’s changing energy landscape and demonstrated its ability to respond to opportunities created by shifting international gas markets.

Beyond natural gas, both countries are placing increasing emphasis on renewable energy cooperation, particularly the development of green hydrogen.

Among the flagship initiatives is the SouthH2 Corridor, a strategic infrastructure project designed to transport renewable hydrogen from Algeria to Germany via Tunisia, Italy and Austria. If completed as planned, the corridor could become one of Europe’s principal supply routes for renewable hydrogen while positioning Algeria as a central pillar of the continent’s long-term decarbonisation strategy.

The project reflects a broader convergence of interests between Algiers and Berlin as European economies seek secure and diversified energy partnerships while Algeria pursues greater industrial integration, technology transfer and value-added investment.

The visit also takes place against an international backdrop characterised by intensified competition for secure supply chains, strategic resources and industrial partnerships.

Within that context, both governments appear intent on transforming an energy-based relationship into a broader strategic alliance encompassing innovation, manufacturing, research, infrastructure and sustainable economic development, reflecting the growing geopolitical and geoeconomic significance of Algerian-German cooperation.
