Algeria Calls for Stronger Global Police Cooperation to Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime at U.N. Summit
Algeria’s police chief has urged closer international coordination among law enforcement agencies to confront the growing convergence of terrorism and organised transnational crime, while highlighting Algeria’s expanding contribution to security capacity-building across Africa and its cooperation with the United Nations on peacekeeping training.

ALGIERS, July 9 — Algeria’s Director General of National Security, Ali Badaoui, called for stronger international police cooperation to confront the evolving threats posed by terrorism and organised transnational crime during the Fifth United Nations Chiefs of Police Summit (UNCOPS 2026) held at U.N. headquarters in New York.
Addressing senior law enforcement officials from member states, Badaoui said the international security environment has become increasingly complex amid the proliferation of regional conflicts, cross-border criminal networks and the growing nexus between organised crime and terrorism.
He argued that these evolving threats require deeper operational coordination and more effective collective responses among national police services and international security institutions.
Call for enhanced international coordination
Badaoui urged law enforcement agencies to strengthen cooperation to better protect public security and maintain public order, advocating closer operational coordination with the United Nations, the International Criminal Police Organization (Interpol) and regional security mechanisms, particularly the African Union Mechanism for Police Cooperation (Afripol).
He also called for expanding the exchange of criminal intelligence, operational expertise and investigative best practices between police services to improve collective responses to transnational security threats.
The Algerian police chief further proposed broadening international cooperation to include efforts to combat money laundering, trace, seize and recover criminal assets, as well as develop joint training and professional capacity-building programmes for police personnel.
Algeria highlights African security support
During his address, Badaoui underscored Algeria’s ongoing contribution to strengthening policing capacities across Africa through specialised training programmes covering cybercrime, narcotics trafficking, forensic science and crisis management.
He said these initiatives are designed to enhance the operational readiness of African law enforcement agencies in responding to increasingly sophisticated security challenges.
Expanding partnership with the United Nations
Badaoui also highlighted Algeria’s growing cooperation with the United Nations in the field of international peace and security.
He recalled the organisation of a joint training programme in May 2026 for officers of Algeria’s National Police and National Gendarmerie focusing on the role and operational requirements of United Nations peacekeeping missions.
Looking ahead, he announced plans for additional train-the-trainer programmes involving representatives from U.N. member states, alongside selection and evaluation exercises to be conducted later this year under the supervision of United Nations experts.
The initiatives, he said, form part of Algeria’s broader efforts to strengthen its contribution to international peacekeeping operations and support multilateral initiatives aimed at promoting global peace and security.
