ALGIERS — Algeria has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the development of African law enforcement agencies and enhancing international police cooperation during the Fifth United Nations Chiefs of Police Summit (UNCOPS 2026) in New York.
Director General of National Security Ali Badaoui headed the Algerian delegation, which included National Gendarmerie Chief and senior security officials, according to a statement from the General Directorate of National Security (DGSN).
Addressing the summit’s opening session in the presence of Algeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Amar Bendjama, Badaoui reaffirmed Algeria’s commitment to strengthening international security cooperation in response to evolving regional and global threats.
He highlighted Algeria’s efforts to reinforce the operational capacities of African police services through specialised training programmes covering organised crime, cybercrime, illicit drug trafficking, forensic science and crisis management.
Badaoui also welcomed a United Nations training programme held in Algeria in May 2026 for officers from the National Police and National Gendarmerie, focusing on the role of UN peacekeeping operations in maintaining international peace and security.
On the sidelines of the summit, the Algerian delegation held bilateral meetings with Belgium’s Minister of Security and Interior, the United Nations Police Adviser, the Head of Recruitment and Selection of the UN Police Division, the Assistant Secretary-General for Peace Operations, as well as the heads of police delegations from Saudi Arabia, Azerbaijan and Chad.

The discussions focused on expanding cooperation in training, capacity building and professional development, while also exploring ways to strengthen Algeria’s participation in United Nations peacekeeping operations through increased contributions from the National Police and National Gendarmerie.
