University of Algiers 1 Allocates 7,000 Places for New Baccalaureate Graduates

The university is preparing for the 2026–2027 academic year with expanded capacity, plans to align academic programmes with national priorities and a forthcoming partnership with German universities.

As Algeria prepares to announce the results of the national baccalaureate examinations, the University of Algiers 1 Benyoucef Benkhedda has completed most of its preparations for the 2026–2027 academic year, allocating 7,000 academic places for newly admitted students.

The university’s rector, Professor Amar Hayahoum, said the current capacity could be increased if necessary, depending on student allocations determined by the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research.

“Our mission is to ensure that all the necessary conditions are in place to receive the students assigned to our university,” Hayahoum said, noting that preparations for the new academic year remain closely linked to the final number of incoming students.

University services are currently mobilising teaching facilities, assessing staffing requirements and adapting administrative and academic resources to ensure students are welcomed under optimal conditions.

The University of Algiers 1, founded in 1909 and regarded as Algeria’s oldest university, comprises three faculties: the Faculty of Law, which enrols nearly 20,000 students; the Faculty of Sciences, with between 8,000 and 9,000 students; and the Faculty of Islamic Sciences, which has around 4,000 students.

Academic Expansion and International Cooperation

Beyond logistical preparations, the university is reviewing its academic offering to better reflect Algeria’s evolving economic and administrative priorities.

Hayahoum said universities are increasingly expected not only to provide academic instruction but also to foster entrepreneurship, encourage wealth creation and support the emergence of start-ups, in line with the Higher Education Ministry’s broader reform agenda.

The rector also announced that the university will launch a new cooperation programme with German universities beginning in September.

Under the initiative, an initial group of 10 Algerian students will undertake academic mobility programmes in Germany, while German students will be welcomed to the University of Algiers 1 as part of reciprocal exchanges.

The partnership will also introduce dual-degree programmes in several disciplines, including information sciences, architecture and mathematics, with the possibility of expanding the scheme to additional fields in consultation with the relevant faculties.

Applicants will be required to demonstrate proficiency in German and a good command of English, according to Hayahoum.

The cooperation programme will also extend to academic staff, with Algerian lecturers undertaking teaching and research visits to partner institutions in Germany, while German academics will deliver short teaching assignments at the University of Algiers 1.

Under the agreement, each participating institution will cover the accommodation and catering costs of the visiting faculty members it hosts, reflecting the reciprocal nature of the partnership and the university’s efforts to expand its international academic engagement.
