Algeria’s Communication Minister Calls for Specialised Journalism to Support Energy Efficiency Campaign

Zouhir Bouamama has urged media professionals to play a central role in promoting responsible energy consumption, arguing that specialised journalism is essential to the success of Algeria’s long-term energy strategy.

Algeria’s Minister of Communication, Dr. Zouhir Bouamama, has called on the country’s media to become active partners in promoting responsible energy consumption, urging journalists to adopt a more specialised and engaged approach to reporting on energy efficiency and public awareness campaigns.

Speaking on Saturday during a training session organised by the Ministry of Communication, Bouamama invited media organisations to contribute fully to the national campaign on rational energy consumption, describing public communication as a key component of Algeria’s broader energy strategy.

“I call on the entire media community to engage fully in this national awareness campaign in order to strengthen civic responsibility, promote the rational use of energy, contribute to the success of the national energy consumption model and reinforce our country’s energy security,” the minister said.

Held under the theme “National Media: A Partner in Energy Awareness,” the event was organised jointly with the Ministry of Energy and Renewable Energies and brought together officials from the Sonelgaz Distribution company and the National Agency for the Promotion and Rationalisation of Energy Use (APRUE).

Bouamama said the initiative forms part of the Summer 2026 National Campaign for the Rationalisation of Energy Consumption, launched by the Ministry of Energy and Renewable Energies in line with the directives of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune.

Training Journalists for a Strategic Sector

The minister argued that the media occupy a central position in the success of Algeria’s national energy efficiency strategy and called for greater specialisation among journalists covering the sector.

According to Bouamama, communicating effectively with the public is essential to supporting technical measures aimed at improving energy efficiency by explaining government policies, encouraging public understanding and promoting responsible consumption practices.

He said journalists must be equipped to present accurate and accessible information capable of influencing public behaviour, adding that continuous professional training has become a necessity to improve the quality of reporting and strengthen its contribution to civic awareness.

The training programme is intended to familiarise journalists with scientific concepts, technical terminology and key data related to the energy sector, enabling them to produce more informed and specialised coverage.

Bouamama said improving media understanding of energy-related issues would also help encourage behavioural change, reduce waste and promote a culture of responsible consumption while increasing public awareness of the strategic importance of energy to the national economy.

The minister stressed that preserving Algeria’s energy resources requires broad national mobilisation involving both public institutions and citizens.

He said the principal challenge lies in maintaining a sustainable balance between energy supply and demand while guaranteeing citizens access to reliable public services and safeguarding resources for future generations.

Bouamama noted that electricity demand reaches around 21,000 megawatts during the peak summer months of July and August, placing considerable pressure on infrastructure and requiring substantial human, technical and financial resources.

While highlighting the state’s investments in both conventional and renewable energy production, as well as continued support for subsidised energy prices, he said citizens also have a responsibility to contribute through more efficient consumption.

Rather than introducing restrictive measures at this stage, the government has chosen to prioritise awareness and education, Bouamama said, adding that other policy options could be considered in the future should new challenges emerge.

He concluded by noting that although improving energy efficiency has become a national priority, rising energy demand also reflects Algeria’s accelerating economic and social development and the state’s ongoing efforts to improve citizens’ living standards.
