Algeria Orders Faster Progress on Eastern Mining Railway as Infrastructure Push Intensifies

Public Works Minister Abdelkader Djellaoui has called for accelerated construction of a key section of the strategic Annaba–Bled El Hadba mining railway while reiterating the government’s focus on delivering major infrastructure projects on schedule.

Algeria’s Minister of Public Works and Basic Infrastructure, Abdelkader Djellaoui, has instructed project officials to take concrete measures to accelerate construction of the Bouchegouf–Dréa section of the Annaba–Bled El Hadba Eastern Mining Railway, a strategic rail corridor intended to strengthen the country’s mining logistics network.

The directives were issued during a coordination meeting held on Saturday at the ministry’s headquarters to review progress on the 121-kilometre railway section, according to a ministry statement.

The meeting followed a field inspection conducted between July 7 and 9 by the Director General of the National Agency for Studies and Monitoring of Railway Investment Projects (ANESRIF), acting on the minister’s instructions.

Senior ministry officials, the head of ANESRIF and representatives of the Chinese construction companies China Communications Construction Company (CCCC) and China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC), which are responsible for building the section, attended the meeting. The company representatives travelled from China to assess construction progress and discuss measures to speed up implementation.

Participants reviewed technical presentations detailing progress across the various construction sites, including earthworks and the completion of engineering structures, supported by recent field images illustrating the status of the works.

Focus on Timely Delivery of Strategic Projects

At the conclusion of the meeting, Djellaoui instructed project managers to establish a detailed timetable for the phased completion of engineering structures to enable the continuous installation of railway tracks.

He also called for reinforcing construction sites with additional personnel and equipment while strengthening coordination among all stakeholders to ensure the project is completed and delivered within the scheduled timeframe.

The Annaba–Bled El Hadba mining railway, extending approximately 422 kilometres, is regarded as one of Algeria’s flagship infrastructure projects. It is expected to facilitate the transport of mineral resources while expanding the country’s railway network in support of industrial and economic development.

Separately, Djellaoui chaired another coordination meeting with the heads of several public agencies under the ministry to assess progress on major national infrastructure projects.

The session brought together officials from ANESRIF, the National Agency for the Construction of Port Infrastructure (ANRIP), the Algerian Infrastructure Engineering Company (SAETI) and a representative of Algérienne des Autoroutes (ADA).

Discussions focused on ongoing motorway, railway and port infrastructure projects, as well as broader plans to strengthen Algeria’s transport network.

The minister stressed the importance of maintaining continuous on-site monitoring, complying with engineering and technical standards and respecting delivery deadlines.

He also urged the agencies concerned to improve coordination, anticipate potential obstacles that could delay implementation and adopt rigorous project management practices to ensure that strategic infrastructure projects are completed efficiently, safely and to the required quality standards.

The ministry said the meetings reflect the government’s continued commitment to accelerating the delivery of major infrastructure projects as part of Algeria’s broader economic modernisation and connectivity strategy.
