Algeria, Mali Reopen Airspace, Restore Ambassadorial Ties in Move to Revive Bilateral Relations
Algiers and Bamako have agreed on reciprocal measures to reopen air links and restore diplomatic representation, in a move aimed at rebuilding bilateral cooperation after months of strained relations.
BY Dr. Hana Saada
Algeria and Mali have announced the reopening of their respective airspaces and the return of their ambassadors, marking a step toward restoring diplomatic engagement and reviving bilateral cooperation between the two neighbouring countries.
Algeria decided, effective Friday, July 10, 2026, to fully reopen its national airspace to Malian air traffic, according to a statement published on the official Facebook page of the Algerian Ministry of National Defence. The decision covers all flights to and from Mali through international routes.
Mali’s transitional government announced a reciprocal measure, reopening its airspace to all civilian and military aircraft travelling to or from Algeria, while also confirming the return of its ambassador to Algiers.
The measures were described by Bamako as part of efforts to “revitalize cooperation and friendship relations” between Mali and Algeria, two countries linked by longstanding historical, geographical and security ties.
Restoring Diplomatic Channels
Under the decision announced by Mali’s transitional authorities, the country’s ambassador extraordinary and plenipotentiary accredited to Algeria will resume his duties in Algiers.
On the Algerian side, President Abdelmadjid Tebboune ordered the return of Ambassador Kamal Retieb to Bamako, according to a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Retieb had been recalled for consultations on April 7, 2025, amid a period of diplomatic tensions between the two countries.
The Algerian Foreign Ministry said the decision reflected President Tebboune’s commitment to restoring Algerian-Malian relations to their historical course, based on mutual respect, cooperation and shared interests.
The ministry added that renewed diplomatic engagement would contribute to strengthening ties between the two peoples while supporting stability and cooperation across the Sahel-Saharan region and the wider African continent.
The reopening of air links and the restoration of ambassadorial representation signal a gradual effort by Algiers and Bamako to rebuild bilateral ties and re-establish mechanisms of dialogue following a period of uncertainty in their relations.
