ALGIERS — South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has reaffirmed his country’s longstanding support for the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination and independence during talks with Sahrawi Foreign Minister Mohamed Yeslem Beissat in Pretoria.
Beissat was received in his capacity as a special envoy of Sahrawi President Brahim Ghali, according to a statement issued by the Sahrawi Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Ramaphosa said South Africa would continue to support the Sahrawi people’s inalienable right to self-determination, describing the position as consistent with the country’s liberation legacy, the founding principles of the African Union, and relevant international resolutions.
The meeting reviewed the longstanding relations of friendship and solidarity between South Africa and the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic, with both sides reaffirming their commitment to strengthening bilateral cooperation and enhancing coordination in regional and international forums.
Beissat briefed the South African president on recent developments concerning the Western Sahara issue, including the latest political and diplomatic efforts, the Sahrawi people’s ongoing struggle, and the United Nations process aimed at completing the decolonisation of the territory. He also outlined the obstacles facing efforts to reach a political settlement.
During the meeting, the Sahrawi foreign minister delivered a written message from President Brahim Ghali to Ramaphosa addressing ways to deepen bilateral relations, expand cooperation, and strengthen consultation and coordination on African and international issues of mutual interest.
