Algeria Condemns UNESCO Pavilion Incident, Confirms Legal and Diplomatic Follow-Up

BY Dr. Hana Saada

Algeria’s Ministry of Culture and Arts said on 21 May it strongly condemned an isolated incident involving an attack on the Algerian pavilion during “African Week” at UNESCO headquarters in Paris on 20 May 2026, adding that it had activated diplomatic and legal channels through its embassy in France.

In a statement, the ministry said the incident was “unacceptable,” while stressing it would not affect Algeria’s participation in international cultural events or its broader cultural diplomacy agenda. It said such events remain governed by principles of dialogue, openness and mutual respect under UNESCO frameworks.

The ministry said Algerian exhibitors at the pavilion continued to represent the country “with composure,” despite the incident, and reaffirmed the continuity of programming at the stand until 22 May.

It also noted that Algeria’s cultural presence abroad forms part of a sustained policy to promote national heritage, including intangible cultural elements recently submitted for updated UNESCO recognition, such as elements of the “Greater Eastern Algerian dress” tradition.

The statement said engagement with international partners would continue as planned, while reiterating reliance on established diplomatic procedures to address the matter.
