BY Dr. Hana Saada
Geneva – The World Health Organization (WHO) has formally awarded Algeria a certificate confirming the elimination of trachoma as a public health problem, the Ministry of Health announced on Wednesday.
The certificate was presented by WHO Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus during the 79th session of the World Health Assembly in Geneva. It was received by Algeria’s Minister of Health, Professor Mohamed Seddik Ait Messaoudene.
The recognition marks a significant milestone in Algeria’s public health strategy and acknowledges sustained national efforts in combating neglected tropical diseases and strengthening preventive healthcare systems across the country.
According to the ministry, the achievement reflects Algeria’s commitment to implementing international health standards and enhancing early detection, prevention, and treatment programmes across all regions.
It added that the elimination of trachoma as a public health concern is the result of coordinated work involving health institutions, medical personnel, and public health structures nationwide, contributing to improved health indicators and disease control outcomes.
The WHO recognition also highlights Algeria’s broader progress in strengthening its healthcare system and advancing sustainable health development goals, reinforcing its regional and international standing in public health governance.
