Algiers – Niger’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Cooperation and Nigeriens Abroad, Bakary Yaou Sangaré, has praised the rapid implementation of bilateral agreements concluded during the Algerian–Nigerien Joint Commission held in Niamey last March, highlighting “a sustained dynamic in strategic cooperation between the two countries.”

Speaking to the press following an audience granted by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune to the visiting Nigerien delegation, the minister said the high-level visit formed part of the follow-up mechanism established after the Joint Commission’s proceedings.

The Nigerien delegation included Minister of State and Interior Minister General Mohamed Toumba, alongside Foreign Minister Bakary Yaou Sangaré.

The Nigerien diplomat recalled the February visit to Algeria by Nigerien President General Abdourahamane Tiani, which was followed by the Joint Commission meeting resulting in the signing of nearly twenty cooperation agreements spanning several sectors.

He stressed the importance of establishing a permanent and regular monitoring mechanism to ensure the effective implementation of the commitments adopted by both sides, noting that Algeria and Niger had already initiated a framework based on periodic exchanges of visits between senior officials to assess the progress of ongoing projects.

According to Sangaré, nearly all agreements have already entered the execution phase, with several projects advancing at a pace exceeding initial expectations.

On the sidelines of the visit, Algerian and Nigerien officials also held a series of bilateral working sessions dedicated to evaluating the operational progress of cooperation projects under implementation.

The minister added that the delegation’s visit aimed to brief President Tebboune on the progress achieved and to receive guidance regarding future avenues of cooperation, while conveying Niger’s interest in expanding bilateral partnership frameworks and institutionalising a sustainable follow-up mechanism.

The accelerating implementation of agreements reflects the broader strategic convergence between Algiers and Niamey, particularly within the framework of regional cooperation, security coordination and economic integration across the Sahel region.
