Algeria Launches 1.406 GW Power Plant in Tébessa to Strengthen Grid and Support Future Exports
By Dr. Hana Saada
Algeria has launched construction of a 1,406 MW power plant in the eastern wilaya of Tébessa, in a move aimed at reinforcing the national grid and supporting future electricity exports.
The project was inaugurated on Monday by Minister of Energy and Renewable Energies Mourad Adjal at the Argoub El Asfar site in the commune of El Aouinet. With a capacity of 1,406.017 MW, the facility is set to become the second-largest power plant in the country.
Described by the minister as a project of “national strategic importance,” the plant is intended to meet rising electricity demand, secure supply and support broader economic development. Built on a 40-hectare site, it will rely on combined-cycle technology—integrating gas and steam turbines—to maximise efficiency and generate additional power from the same fuel input.
The project carries an investment of DZD 184.09bn and is expected to reduce fuel consumption by around 30 per cent. Once operational, it will supply electricity to Tébessa and other regions, while also positioning the border wilaya for potential cross-border energy exports.
Implementation has been entrusted to Sonelgaz-Production of Electricity in partnership with China National Electric Engineering Co. (CNEEC), with a construction timeline of 48 months. The project is expected to generate around 1,500 jobs during the construction phase and 500 permanent positions once operational, while contributing to skills development and technology transfer.
Tébessa currently records electricity coverage close to 99 per cent and gas coverage exceeding 77 per cent, among the highest levels nationally. Additional projects scheduled for 2026 are expected to raise gas coverage to 80 per cent, while remote areas not connected to the grid will be served through solar energy installations.
The plant underscores Algeria’s effort to combine capacity expansion with efficiency gains—anchoring domestic supply while opening the door to regional energy exports.
