Algeria Pushes Wastewater Reuse, Network Modernisation to Strengthen Water Security
By Dr. Hana Saada
Algeria is stepping up efforts to modernise sanitation services and expand the use of treated wastewater as a strategic alternative resource, Water Minister Lounes Bouzegza said during a working visit to the National Sanitation Office.
Mr Bouzegza described sanitation infrastructure as a core pillar of public health protection and environmental preservation, as well as a key tool in flood prevention, commending the work of field intervention teams. The head of the National Sanitation Office, Abdelkader Ziouche, affirmed the agency’s readiness to deliver effective public services, with staff fully mobilised to meet citizens’ needs and safeguard health and the environment.
The minister called for stronger coordination with local authorities to improve operational efficiency and ensure infrastructure readiness in the face of rising wastewater volumes. He emphasised the importance of rehabilitating sanitation networks through early diagnostics and preventive maintenance to avoid blockages.
He also stressed the need to scale up the reuse of treated wastewater, particularly in agriculture, industry and urban green spaces, while reserving conventional water resources for drinking purposes. In parallel, he instructed that all sanitation facilities be brought into operation in line with presidential directives, alongside improvements in public communication systems to inform citizens of disruptions or maintenance works.
Mr Bouzegza underlined the importance of anticipatory action to mitigate flood risks and enhance service quality in line with current challenges, with particular attention to working conditions and protective equipment for intervention personnel.
He concluded that building public trust depends on proximity, communication and the consistent delivery of reliable, high-quality public services.
