Algeria and Niger moved to strengthen strategic cooperation in the hydrocarbons sector during talks held in Algiers between Algerian Energy Minister Mohamed Arkab and a Nigerien delegation led by Abdoul Karim Mohamed Ali, Secretary-General of Niger’s Ministry of Petroleum.

The discussions focused on expanding cooperation across the hydrocarbons value chain, including refining, petrochemicals, drilling activities and the development of petroleum products in Niger with support from Algeria’s Naftal.

The meeting took place in the context of an official visit to Algeria by a high-level Nigerien ministerial delegation headed by Niger’s Minister of State for Interior, Public Security and Territorial Administration. Senior officials from Sonidep and representatives from both countries also attended the talks.

Both sides reviewed the outcome of technical visits carried out by Nigerien officials to Sonatrach facilities in Boumerdès and Hassi Messaoud, where the delegation was introduced to Algerian expertise in exploration, production, training and oilfield services.

The discussions also addressed opportunities related to local content development, the exchange of expertise in petroleum and environmental data management, and cooperation in oil services.

Arkab reaffirmed Algeria’s readiness, through Sonatrach and its subsidiaries, to support Niger’s hydrocarbons sector through technology transfer, training programmes and technical capacity-building initiatives for Nigerien engineers and technicians, notably via the Algerian Petroleum Institute and specialised Sonatrach institutions.

The Nigerien delegation praised the level of bilateral cooperation and highlighted Sonatrach’s technical expertise and broader contribution to energy skills development across Africa.

At the conclusion of the meeting, both parties reiterated their commitment to strengthening Algerian-Nigerien partnership in hydrocarbons, expanding technical and scientific exchanges and supporting deeper intra-African cooperation in the oil and gas industry.
