Algeria Orders Telecom Operators to Improve Coverage on Strategic Road Networks, Warns of Penalties for Lapses

By Dr. Hana Saada

Algiers has instructed mobile operators to strengthen network coverage along key national road corridors and warned of penalties for non-compliance with quality-of-service obligations, the communications ministry said on Monday.

Minister of Post and Telecommunications Sid Ali Zerrouki chaired a meeting with the head of the national regulatory authority and representatives of mobile operators to assess progress in extending coverage along major transport routes, described as critical infrastructure for economic activity and the movement of goods and people.

The discussions focused in particular on the East–West highway, following the expiry of deadlines previously set for operators to ensure adequate coverage. The regulator presented field test results assessing service quality and compliance with contractual and regulatory commitments.

Zerrouki said operators must strictly adhere to established coverage and quality standards, adding that any verified shortcomings in meeting obligations would trigger enforcement measures and sanctions предусмотрed under applicable regulations.

The meeting also set deadlines for expanding and improving coverage along strategic north–south corridors, including National Roads 1, 3 and 6, particularly in southern and remote regions, with the aim of ensuring continuous telecommunications services nationwide.

The minister said improving telecom quality was an economic, social and security requirement, directly linked to road safety, transport flows, and economic activity, as well as reducing the digital divide across the country.
