Algerian lawmaker Smaïl Mira, a member of parliament for Béjaïa and son of independence figure Abderrahmane Mira, drew national attention after disclosing serious and sensitive information about the MAK movement, designated as a terrorist organisation by Algerian authorities, in remarks broadcast on national television.
The statements came as he simultaneously announced his definitive resignation from the National Democratic Rally (RND), marking a clear political break with the party.
Mira said his resignation reflected a “systematic deterioration” within the RND, citing what he described as a deviation from its founding political line, a weakening of internal democratic standards, and the rise of exclusionary practices alongside top-down appointments of figures “unconnected to the party’s militant history”. He also criticised the appointment of individuals “under suspicion” to leadership positions in Béjaïa, saying this undermined the party’s legacy and credibility. He described his departure as a final rupture with the party’s structures and called on “honourable militants” to resist what he termed the “hijacking” of the party.
In the same intervention, Mira disclosed a “triangular nexus” involving the MAK movement, Morocco and the Zionist entity. He said MAK leader Ferhat Mehenni holds Zionist nationality and a Zionist identity card, describing him as a “direct agent”.
He added that members of the group had received military training in Morocco and that some were currently present in Tel Aviv. He further linked the movement to acts of sabotage, including recent wildfires, the destruction of water storage facilities and damage to electricity infrastructure, which he said were carried out under direct instructions from its leadership.
Mira also said he was prepared to “take up arms again” to confront the group, drawing a parallel with his involvement against armed groups during Algeria’s black decade in the 1990s.
