EU calls Algeria a “reliable partner” in energy security as talks deepen on Mediterranean pact
BY Dr. Hana Saada
European Commissioner for the Mediterranean Dubravka Šuica said on Tuesday that the European Union considers Algeria a reliable partner in strengthening Europe’s energy security, as both sides seek to deepen cooperation under a new Mediterranean framework.
Šuica, on an official visit to Algiers, held a series of meetings with Algerian officials focused on expanding cooperation across energy, investment and broader economic ties.
Talks with Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf reviewed the full scope of the Algeria–EU partnership and explored ways to inject greater momentum and balance, in line with the objectives of the “Pact for the Mediterranean” launched in November 2025. Discussions covered investment, trade, energy, the green economy, higher education and mobility, alongside regional development and security challenges in the Mediterranean basin.
Separate discussions with Energy Minister Mourad Adjal focused on renewable energy, green hydrogen and energy efficiency. Both sides stressed the need to accelerate regional cooperation and develop joint projects in strategic energy sectors.
The talks also reviewed major infrastructure initiatives, including the planned electricity interconnection between Algeria and Italy and the SoutH2 Corridor project to produce and export green hydrogen to Europe. These projects are expected to reinforce energy exchanges across the Mediterranean and consolidate Algeria’s role as a stable supplier.
Earlier, Hydrocarbons Minister Mohamed Arkab said energy cooperation remained a central pillar of Algeria–EU relations, citing ongoing reforms aimed at improving investment conditions and expanding opportunities in oil and gas exploration, refining and petrochemicals.
Šuica also outlined the EU’s renewed Mediterranean strategy, describing it as a framework to support stability, economic development and the energy transition. She said European companies showed growing interest in the Algerian market and reaffirmed the EU’s intention to broaden cooperation in areas of shared interest.
