Djamaâ El Djazair Rector Says Speech Carries Moral Responsibility Amid Calls for Stronger Media-Ethics Alignment

A senior Algerian religious official said on Tuesday that speech carries “moral and religious responsibility”, as he called for greater coordination between media professionals and religious institutions in guiding public discourse.

Mohamed Maâmoun Al Kacimi Al Hassani, rector of Djamaâ El Djazair, made the remarks during a conference at the mosque’s cultural centre marking World Press Freedom Day. The event brought together journalists, academics and religious figures to discuss the relationship between media practice, ethics and religious reference.

He said speech should be understood first as a responsibility before being considered a right, urging media professionals and civil society actors to promote accuracy, verification and value-based messaging in their work. He described journalists as having a role in “guiding towards truth” and safeguarding societal cohesion.

Other participants stressed the role of religious institutions in countering misinformation and maintaining reference frameworks rooted in Algeria’s religious traditions. Speakers also highlighted the growing complexity of the digital information environment, pointing to social media dynamics, artificial intelligence-generated content and online disinformation as emerging challenges for media credibility.

Several contributors argued that religious communication should be more structured and professionally framed when conveyed through media platforms, calling for specialised training for journalists covering religious affairs and closer cooperation between editorial teams and religious scholars.

The discussions also addressed the need for institutional coordination between media organisations, educational structures and religious bodies to strengthen public trust in information and reduce exposure to misleading content.

The conference concluded that Algeria’s media landscape has developed significant institutional capacity, but that the next phase requires improved editorial standards, stronger verification practices and a more strategic approach to religious communication in the digital space.
