Algeria Pushes Non-Hydrocarbon Exports Drive, Targets AfCFTA Markets

BY Dr. Hana Saada

Algeria is stepping up efforts to expand non-hydrocarbon exports and deepen its integration into African markets through the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), Trade Minister Kamel Rezig said on Thursday.

Speaking at the opening of an information day at the Algerian Export Promotion Agency (ALGEX) dedicated to access to African markets under AfCFTA, Rezig said the initiative forms part of a broader state strategy to support national companies in expanding across the continent.

He said Algeria’s increased commercial presence in Africa reflects a strategic priority to position the country as a key economic actor on the continent and benefit from Africa’s expanding growth dynamics.

Rezig described AfCFTA as one of the world’s largest trade zones, covering more than 1.3 billion consumers, and said it offers significant opportunities to boost intra-African trade, investment flows and integrated value chains.

He noted that Algeria was among the first countries to join and implement the agreement, having ratified the framework, published tariff concession lists and launched trade exchanges under the mechanism as of 1 November 2024.

The minister said implementation is progressing gradually, with 25 state parties having eliminated tariffs on 90% of tariff lines since 1 January 2025, while the remaining 7% are scheduled for phased liberalisation until 2030.

Rezig also stressed the need to raise awareness among exporters on trade procedures, including rules of origin, customs advantages, logistics and financial mechanisms, as well as market access conditions across Africa.

He highlighted ongoing reforms, including the creation of the Algerian Export Promotion Agency under Executive Decree No. 25-234 and a planned digitalisation of export procedures through a forthcoming one-stop platform aimed at simplifying trade operations.

He pointed to the 4th Intra-African Trade Fair (IATF), held in Algiers in September 2025, which generated over $1 billion in global contracts, including $11.4 billion in deals benefiting Algeria, underscoring the country’s growing role as a regional trade hub.

Rezig called on Algerian economic operators to seize opportunities in African markets, particularly in industry, agriculture, pharmaceuticals and services, as part of efforts to strengthen non-hydrocarbon exports and consolidate Algeria’s position in the continental economy.
