Algeria Seeks National Communication Strategy as Minister Warns of Growing Influence of Digital Spaces
By Dr. Hana Saada
ALGIERS — Algeria has renewed efforts to modernise its institutional communication framework amid rapid transformations in the global information environment, with Communication Minister Zoheir Bouamama emphasizing the growing impact of digital and virtual platforms on public discourse and state communication.
Speaking on Saturday at the opening of the 2026 Forum on Institutional Communication, Bouamama said the event forms part of broader state efforts to adapt Algeria’s national communication system to profound changes reshaping contemporary modes of information exchange.
The minister stressed that the objective is to lay the foundations for an integrated national communication strategy capable of enhancing effectiveness, coherence and responsiveness across public institutions in an increasingly complex media landscape.
Bouamama noted that the expansion of digital spaces and virtual networks has fundamentally transformed the concept of institutional communication, creating new challenges for governments seeking to maintain direct engagement with citizens while ensuring the credibility and reliability of public information.
The forum brings together officials, communication specialists, media professionals and academic experts to examine the evolving relationship between institutions and society at a time when digital technologies continue to reshape public opinion and information consumption patterns.
Discussions are structured around two principal themes. The first focuses on institutional communication within a rapidly evolving communications ecosystem, while the second examines the role of communication strategies in strengthening civic awareness in what participants described as an era increasingly influenced by digital dominance.
Participants are also exploring mechanisms to promote the dissemination of reliable and verifiable information amid a global environment marked by the rapid spread of misinformation, disinformation campaigns and digital manipulation.
Two specialized workshops are being held alongside the forum. The first examines the role of national media as a partner in institutional communication, addressing issues of credibility and future prospects, while the second focuses on communication structures and tools within government institutions and public administrations.
