Algeria’s Army Chief Calls for Military Modernisation as New War College Director Takes Office

ALGIERS — General of the Army Saïd Chanegriha, Algeria’s Minister Delegate to the Minister of National Defence and Chief of Staff of the People’s National Army (ANP), presided on Saturday over the official installation of Major General Mohamed Ahmed Sayah as Director of the Higher War School, using the occasion to underline the military’s ongoing efforts to adapt to a rapidly evolving regional and international security environment.
Representing President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces and Minister of National Defence, Chanegriha supervised the ceremony at the institution, where Major General Sayah formally succeeded Major General Hamid Fekane, according to a statement issued by the Ministry of National Defence.
The ceremony included the official transfer of command, the handing over of the national emblem and the approval of the formal handover report, in accordance with military regulations.
In an address delivered before the school’s leadership, officers and personnel, Chanegriha stressed the strategic importance of continuously adapting military education and training programmes to the accelerating transformations affecting global security and contemporary warfare.
He described the Higher War School as a centre of excellence that has contributed to preparing officers capable of responding to geopolitical and geostrategic developments in an increasingly complex international environment.
Chanegriha called on the institution’s leadership to intensify efforts to modernise educational programmes and strengthen the school’s role as a strategic think tank capable of generating proposals and operational assessments derived from the field experience of ANP officers.
Particular emphasis was placed on drawing lessons from modern conflicts and integrating those lessons into efforts aimed at enhancing the operational capabilities and readiness of Algeria’s armed forces.
The army chief stated that the ANP is currently engaged in a decisive effort to adapt its forces and structures to contemporary challenges, particularly against the backdrop of persistent instability across the regional and international landscape.
He said the armed forces expect all personnel to contribute actively to this modernisation process in support of safeguarding Algeria’s independence, national sovereignty and territorial integrity, while preserving the country’s security, stability and national cohesion.
The ceremony concluded with Chanegriha signing the institution’s Golden Book, according to the Ministry of National Defence.
