ALGIERS — Organisers of the third edition of the Algiers Capital Sports Festival, scheduled from 18 to 20 June under the slogan “Joy Unites Us,” said this year’s edition will be the largest to date, featuring record participation from sports bodies, associations and specialised leagues.

Speaking at a press briefing held at the Algiers wilaya headquarters on Saturday, organisers said the event will include more than 120 sports and recreational activities distributed across 14 main locations, including beaches, urban parks, forests, coastal areas and public green spaces.

The programme combines maritime, urban and leisure sports, including boating excursions, kayaking, rowing and sport fishing, alongside competitions in mini-football, handball, volleyball and 3×3 basketball. Cultural and street performances are also scheduled, such as hip-hop shows, street circus acts, kite displays, chess tournaments, night running events and cycling races.

Public spaces mobilised for the festival include major leisure and recreation sites such as El Wiam El Madani Zoo and amusement park, Dounia Park, Bab El Oued seafront promenade, El-Mesmak Park, Sidi Fredj promenade, Riadh El Feth, Independence Walk, Jardin d’Essai of Hamma, the Hamma urban park, Sablettes Park, as well as the Oued El Harrach riverbanks (source and estuary areas), in addition to Sandli in Ben Talha, Oued Smar Park and the Bab Ezzouar urban park.

Organisers also announced a social initiative aimed at encouraging sports participation, with all public swimming pools affiliated to the event to be opened free of charge during the festival, allowing families and young people access to sports facilities in safe conditions.

According to Redha Doumi, adviser to the Algiers wali and member of the organising committee, the allocation of multiple venues aims to promote sports practice in all its forms and allow the public to discover urban and natural recreational spaces across the capital.

Previous editions recorded strong attendance, with the first attracting over one million visitors and the second exceeding 1.5 million visitors and 30,000 participants, in addition to more than 20 million online views across social media platforms.

A key new feature of this edition is the launch of the “SportAl” application, designed to provide citizens with real-time access to activities and venues, supporting broader participation and extending the festival’s impact throughout the year.

The event will also include an international dimension, with the participation of representatives, partners and guests from several friendly countries, aimed at exchanging expertise and promoting the values of sport, youth engagement and international friendship.
