As global football fans turn their attention to Mexican stadiums for the kickoff of the 2026 World Cup, renewed scrutiny has fallen on FIFA and its president Gianni Infantino, with critics accusing the governing body of exposing a stark double standard shaped by Western political influence and U.S. dominance.

During the opening press conference in Mexico City, on the eve of the tournament’s inaugural match, Infantino strongly defended decisions linked to U.S. administrative measures. He justified FIFA’s compliance with visa restrictions imposed by American authorities affecting members of the Iranian delegation, as well as the exclusion of Somali referee Omar Artan from officiating World Cup matches on what were described as security grounds by Washington.

Rather than asserting the autonomy of global football governance, Infantino urged calm and acceptance, while expressing gratitude to the United States administration—an approach that has been interpreted by observers as a clear sign of institutional deference to political power within the host nation.

In parallel developments that further intensified controversy, FIFA’s decision to grant official World Cup accreditation to French journalist Christophe Gleizes—currently imprisoned in Algeria on charges related to glorifying terrorism and undermining public order, with the case under judicial review by Algerian courts—has sparked additional debate.

FIFA’s move has been widely interpreted as an attempt to apply external pressure under the banner of press freedom, raising questions over the organisation’s neutrality and its willingness to engage in matters that fall within the sovereign jurisdiction of national judicial systems.

The unfolding situation has fuelled broader concerns that the 2026 World Cup risks becoming more than a sporting celebration, instead reflecting deeper geopolitical imbalances within global football governance and the increasing entanglement of sport with international power structures.

The perceived inconsistencies have generated widespread reaction in media and sporting circles, with commentators questioning how an organisation that consistently advocates the separation of sport from politics can intervene in a sovereign legal matter in one country, while simultaneously remaining silent in the face of restrictive decisions affecting athletes and officials imposed by another.
