Algeria Urges International Recognition of Colonial Crimes, Offers Historical Archives to African Reparations Efforts
BY Dr. Hana Saada
ALGIERS/ACCRA, June 18 — Algeria has called for explicit international recognition of the criminal nature of slavery, colonialism and related abuses committed against African peoples, while pledging to make its historical archives available to continental efforts seeking reparative justice.
The appeal was made on Thursday by the President of Algeria’s Council of the Nation, Azzouz Nasri, representing President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, during a high-level consultative conference on reparatory justice and historical reparations related to the transatlantic slave trade, held in Accra, Ghana.
According to an official statement, Nasri urged international organisations and former colonial powers to acknowledge the systematic criminal character of practices associated with enslavement, colonial domination and the grave violations committed against African populations.
He reaffirmed Algeria’s support for initiatives bringing together African historians and international law experts to compile documentary evidence and legal records related to historical injustices suffered by the continent.
Drawing on Algeria’s own experience under colonial rule, Nasri announced the country’s readiness to place its historical archives, material evidence and documented testimonies at the disposal of African and international institutions involved in efforts to advance truth, accountability and reparative justice.
He recalled that Algeria had experienced severe violations during the colonial period, including mass atrocities and the use of prohibited chemical and nuclear weapons, adding that these historical records would contribute to strengthening a common African position on reparations.
Nasri also highlighted Algeria’s hosting of the International High-Level Conference on “Crimes of Colonialism in Africa”, held in Algiers on November 30 and December 1, 2025.
The conference concluded with the adoption of the “Algiers Declaration”, which was subsequently endorsed by the African Union Summit in February 2026 and is intended to serve as a roadmap for advancing continental efforts on historical justice and reparations.
