Algeria Launches National Energy Consumption Control Campaign
BY Dr. Hana Saada
ALGIERS — Minister of Energy and Renewable Energies Mourad Adjal on Thursday officially launched a national campaign aimed at promoting energy consumption efficiency, during a national meeting in Algiers bringing together the Electricity and Gas Regulatory Commission (CREG), consumer protection associations, and several public institutions active in the energy sector.
In his address, Adjal highlighted a series of state-led measures aimed at strengthening electricity production, transmission, and distribution capacities. These efforts, he said, are intended to ensure continuity of public service and meet rising energy demand, particularly during the summer period when electricity consumption increases significantly.
The minister stressed that the effectiveness of these investments also depends on public engagement in adopting responsible consumption practices. Rational electricity use, he stated, is essential to maintaining balance between supply and demand while ensuring service continuity and quality for all users.
For the 2026 edition, the campaign focuses on practical measures to reduce energy consumption, including the rational use of air conditioning by setting appropriate temperatures, reducing lighting consumption by maximising natural light where possible, switching off unused electrical appliances instead of leaving them on standby, and opting for high energy-efficiency equipment.
The Ministry of Energy and Renewable Energies called on citizens, economic operators, and institutions to actively participate in the initiative, stressing that energy efficiency is a collective responsibility.
It underlined that controlling electricity consumption contributes to preserving national energy resources, stabilising the power system, and supporting sustainable development.
