Algerian Army Reports Seizure of More Than Nine Quintals of Cannabis and Arrest of 587 Individuals in One Week
BY Dr. Hana Saada
ALGIERS — Combined units of the Algerian People’s National Army (ANP), in coordination with various security services, thwarted attempts to smuggle more than nine quintals of processed cannabis across Algeria’s western borders between June 10 and June 17, according to an operational report released by the Ministry of National Defence on Thursday.
The weekly operational assessment highlighted a series of counterterrorism and anti-crime operations conducted across the country, which the military said reflected the continued readiness and operational capabilities of Algeria’s armed forces.
As part of counterterrorism efforts, ANP detachments arrested five individuals identified as providing logistical support to terrorist groups during separate operations carried out nationwide.
In the fight against organised crime and drug trafficking, combined military units, working alongside security agencies, arrested 40 suspected drug traffickers and intercepted attempts to introduce 9 quintals and 21 kilograms of processed cannabis originating from Morocco, the statement said.
Security forces also seized 901,607 psychotropic tablets during operations conducted across the country’s military regions.
In southern Algeria, ANP detachments operating in the provinces of Tamanrasset, Bordj Badji Mokhtar, Illizi, In Salah and In Guezzam arrested 531 individuals and confiscated 32 vehicles, 364 generators, 159 jackhammers, quantities of raw gold ore and stones, as well as equipment used in illegal gold mining activities.
In separate operations, security forces apprehended 11 additional individuals and seized two submachine guns, one automatic pistol, three hunting rifles, 15,920 litres of fuel and three tonnes of food products intended for smuggling activities.
The military also reported that Coast Guard units thwarted several attempts at irregular maritime migration along Algeria’s coastline, rescuing 96 people aboard makeshift vessels.
Meanwhile, authorities arrested 574 irregular migrants of various nationalities across the national territory, according to the operational report.
