Oran Inaugurates First Monoclonal Antibody Manufacturing Unit in Algeria

BY Dr. Hana Saada

ORAN — Minister of Pharmaceutical Industry Wassim Kouidri on Thursday inaugurated in the industrial zone of Oran Algeria’s first manufacturing unit dedicated to monoclonal antibodies, according to a ministry statement.

The facility, described as a biotechnology production site, will manufacture treatments used in the management of certain cancers, including breast cancer. The production will be carried out on a full-process basis, the CEO of Orion-Lab said, adding that the project was developed in partnership with a foreign pharmaceutical company with an investment estimated at €20 million.

The project promoters said the initiative aligns with national strategic directives aimed at strengthening cancer care capacity and expanding domestic production of high-value-added medicines, in line with the national cancer control plan.

The ministry said the minister welcomed the inauguration of the facility, which it described as the second largest of its kind on the African continent. It also noted that two additional pharmaceutical production sites of similar scale are expected to enter operation in the near future.
