Algerian Consumer Organisation Warns of “Deadly” Weight-Gain Mixtures Sold Online

By Dr. Hana Saada

Algeria’s Consumer Protection Organisation has warned against the growing circulation of unregulated dietary supplements and herbal weight-gain mixtures marketed through digital platforms, citing mounting public health risks and unsafe production conditions.

Fadi Tamim, the organisation’s national coordinator, said consumer complaints and reports linked to such products had increased sharply, describing the phenomenon as a serious threat to public health.

Tamim said investigations and security raids on clandestine workshops uncovered unsanitary manufacturing environments marked by the presence of insects and rodents, while many operators were found to be working without licences or regulatory documentation.

He added that numerous products contain unidentified ingredients and that some mixtures marketed as “100% natural” were in fact produced using crushed pharmaceutical substances associated with serious health complications.

Tamim called on economic operators, specialists and regulatory authorities to support efforts aimed at curbing the phenomenon, including tighter restrictions on the digital marketing of unregulated supplements and mixtures.

Algerian gendarmerie units have recently dismantled several criminal networks involved in the trade and storage of such products, following coordinated operations conducted alongside consumer protection organisations and commercial inspection services.
