France–Algeria Tensions: De Villepin Calls Algeria “Key State,” Warns Against Political “Posturing”
By Dr. Hana Saada
Former French Prime Minister Dominique de Villepin has described Algeria as a “key state” in North Africa, arguing that diplomatic stagnation between Paris and Algiers undermines mutual strategic interests amid regional instability and unresolved bilateral disputes.
Speaking to Radio France Internationale, de Villepin welcomed recent French diplomatic engagement with Algeria, including the visit of Minister Alice Rufo to Algiers for commemorations marking the May 8, 1945 massacres, alongside France’s ambassador to Algeria.
He said renewed contact marked a necessary shift after months of political cooling, stressing that Algeria’s geopolitical weight makes sustained engagement indispensable for France, particularly given security developments in the Sahel and ongoing coordination challenges over the return of French nationals subject to deportation orders.
De Villepin also pointed to broader strategic stakes across the Mediterranean, describing the current impasse as counterproductive at a time of heightened regional volatility.
Responding to remarks by former Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau, who accused President Emmanuel Macron of being overly accommodating toward Algeria, de Villepin rejected what he characterised as confrontational rhetoric, questioning the utility of escalating tensions.
He criticised what he called political “posturing,” suggesting that hardline discourse may appeal to segments of the Republican electorate but offers no workable diplomatic outcome. “We do not need symbolic escalation,” he said, adding that France and Algeria share long-term strategic interests that require pragmatic engagement rather than political theatre.
De Villepin reiterated that France’s relationship with Algeria must be anchored in shared security, migration management and regional stability objectives, warning that disengagement would carry strategic costs for both sides.
