Algeria’s Noureddine Yassaa Champions Africa’s Energy and Transport Infrastructure at AU Extraordinary Ministerial Session

Algiers, Algeria | December 5th, 2024 — On Thursday, December 5, 2024, Noureddine Yassaa, the Algerian State Secretary for Renewable Energy, participated in the third extraordinary session of African Union (AU) Ministers for Energy and Transport. The session, organized by the AU Commission, was conducted via videoconference, and concluded with the adoption of a comprehensive program aimed at developing infrastructure across Africa, particularly in the sectors of energy and transport.
During the session, which featured the participation of 39 African countries and various regional and international organizations, key initiatives were discussed and approved, including the African Strategy for Energy Efficiency, the roadmap and action plan for its implementation, and the African Green Hydrogen Strategy. In addition, the meeting also saw the endorsement of the Continental Strategy to Support the Development and Deployment of Sustainable Aviation Fuel and Low-Carbon Aviation Fuels across the continent, alongside the approval of the Abuja Safety and Air Navigation Objectives.
In his address, Mr. Yassaa expressed his gratitude to the African Union Commission for organizing this significant meeting, which he emphasized as vital for the promotion of sustainable development across the African continent. He affirmed Algeria’s commitment to strengthening infrastructure in Africa, particularly in energy and transport, as key enablers of continental integration and energy security.
Mr. Yassaa further underlined that Algeria, in alignment with its commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the African Union Agenda 2063, has laid out ambitious strategies to enhance energy efficiency and develop renewable energy, including green hydrogen. He stressed that these efforts are part of a broader vision that seeks to achieve a fair and equitable energy transition based on innovation and regional integration.
Highlighting Algeria’s role in supporting its African counterparts, Mr. Yassaa reaffirmed the country’s dedication to international cooperation, which aims to channel effective investments into national development plans, particularly in infrastructure, electricity, renewable energy, and green hydrogen. Additionally, he emphasized the need for resilient infrastructure capable of adapting to climate change and aligning efforts with the goals of continental integration, as outlined in the African Union’s 2063 Agenda. Algeria is committed to sharing its technical expertise and transferring technology, with a focus on capacity building, technology transfer, and technical assistance.
The State Secretary concluded by reiterating Algeria’s readiness to support all initiatives aimed at strengthening African cooperation and expressed his belief in the importance of seizing available opportunities to build a shared future that enhances the welfare of the continent’s peoples.
The third extraordinary session of the AU’s Specialized Technical Committee on Transport and Energy also covered essential topics, such as the development of smart infrastructure, energy efficiency strategies, the advancement of green hydrogen, and the enhancement of energy security, all in line with the African Union’s long-term sustainability goals and Agenda 2063.
